Chapter 9

Alexander didn't utter a single word.

He stood where he was while Daniel continued talking about the deal as though nothing had happened.

But Alexander could no longer hear a thing.

His eyes still wandered toward the garden from time to time.

Elena was there.

Only a few meters away.

And yet, he didn't move toward her.

He could call her name.

He could ask Daniel to leave them alone.

He could approach her and ask where she had been for the past two months.

But he did none of those things.

For the first time, he chose to think before acting.

He quietly took out his phone and typed a short message.

Then he slipped it back into his pocket.

Daniel asked, "Is everything all right?"

Alexander raised his eyes to him.

"Of course."

Daniel smiled.

"You seem distracted today."

"I was thinking about the deal."

It was an easy lie.

So easy that Daniel never suspected a thing.

Lunch continued.

The two men discussed figures, investments, and the new expansion plan.

Alexander participated in the conversation as usual.

He discussed the numbers.

Objected to certain clauses.

And suggested revisions.

Daniel noticed nothing unusual.

But inside Alexander's mind, a single set of questions kept repeating themselves.

How had she been living?

Where had she been?

And was she all right?

When lunch was over, Alexander left the house as though nothing had happened.

He shook Daniel's hand with a formal smile.

"It was a pleasure meeting you."

"Likewise."

Alexander got into his car.

The door closed.

And as soon as the car pulled away from the house, his smile vanished.

"Take me to the office," he told the driver.

---

Less than an hour later, Omar was standing in front of his desk.

Alexander closed the door himself.

He placed his phone on the desk.

Then he spoke.

"I found her."

Omar's expression changed.

"Mrs. Elena?"

Alexander nodded.

Omar didn't ask how.

He knew the man before him wouldn't summon him to his office over ordinary news.

"Where?"

"At Daniel Walker's house."

Omar fell silent for a moment.

"Did you speak to her?"

"No."

Omar raised an eyebrow.

"Why not?"

Alexander sat down behind his desk.

"Because she doesn't know I saw her."

Then he added, "And I want it to stay that way."

Omar nodded slowly.

"What would you like me to do?"

Alexander took a small piece of paper and wrote the address on it.

"I want you to make sure she's all right."

Omar took the paper.

"Do you want us to keep an eye on her?"

"From a distance."

Then Alexander looked directly at him.

"Don't approach her. Don't make her feel as though someone is following her."

"Understood."

"And I want only two trusted men assigned to this."

He paused briefly.

"If anything unusual happens around her, I want to know before it reaches her."

Omar nodded.

"It will be done."

Just as he was about to leave, Alexander called out to him.

"Omar."

The man turned around.

"Don't disappoint me."

Omar's expression shifted slightly. He nodded, then left.

Alexander was alone once more.

He opened his desk drawer.

Inside was an old photograph of Elena.

He gazed at it for a long time.

Then he set it aside.

He didn't know why he had chosen to protect her from a distance.

Perhaps he had finally realized that the last thing Elena needed was for the man who had caused her pain and driven her away to force his way back into her life.

But there was another truth he couldn't ignore.

He had found her. He had found his angel.

And he wouldn't allow himself to lose sight of her again.

---

On the other side of the city, Elena was walking through the garden beside Liam.

The boy was enthusiastically talking about school.

"Miss Elena, will you come again tomorrow?"

She smiled.

"Of course."

"Even if I finish all my homework?"

She laughed.

"Especially if you finish it."

Liam ran ahead of her.

She paused for a moment, gazing at the trees beyond the fence.

A strange feeling crept over her.

The sensation that someone was watching the area.

She looked around.

There was no one in sight.

Only a black car passing along the street before disappearing from view.

She shook her head.

"Maybe I'm imagining things."

Then she returned to Liam.

She had no idea that the man who had seen her from a distance hadn't appeared there by chance.

Nor did she know that a pair of eyes had been watching the area ever since...

After finishing her session with Liam, Elena said goodbye to both him and his father and left.

Sophia was waiting outside in her car. The two friends were going shopping together, hoping to lift Elena's spirits and give her a change of scenery before she returned home.

A Note to My Readers

Please forgive me if the events still seem a little slow. I promise you'll enjoy what's coming. I'm still planning and thinking carefully about how to develop the plot while making sure this novel stands apart from other stories in the way its events unfold.

But the car moved a little closer before coming to a stop.Alexander stepped out of the car calmly, then closed the door behind him.He paused for a moment, his eyes following Elena as she continued walking ahead of him. Then he started after her.He didn't hurry to catch up. Instead, he kept a reasonable distance between them, as though giving her the chance to notice his presence on her own.A few moments later, his voice came from behind her."Elena."She stopped where she was.She closed her eyes for a moment, as though hoping she had been mistaken. Then she slowly turned around.Alexander stood a few steps away, his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat, a calm smile resting on his face. She looked at him for a few moments without saying anything. Then she asked,"You?"His smile widened."I was hoping for a warmer welcome than that."She frowned."What are you doing here?"He answered simply,"Taking a walk."She glanced at the street around them, then looked back at him."B

The photograph remained in Elena's hands longer than she realized. She was still sitting there, surrounded by silence, her eyes fixed on the old picture of her and Alexander from that distant day.She was smiling in it as though the entire world held nothing but kindness for her.And Alexander...He was looking at her instead of the camera. Her eyes lingered on those little details. His arm around her waist, her shy smile, and the ring shining on her finger. Everything in the picture seemed so simple.Pure, perfect... and real. But that special photograph had now become an unbearably painful memory. She ran her fingertips along its edge, then let out a long sigh. How distant the girl in that picture seemed now.She no longer knew whether she missed Alexander himself...Or her former self...Or the man she had believed him to be back then. Her phone suddenly vibrated on the table. She startled slightly, then looked at it.Ryan's name appeared on the screen. She left the photograph on t

He opened the box. Inside was an elegant ring that glittered beneath the garden lights. Then Alexander lowered himself onto one knee before her. Elena covered her mouth with her hand, unable to stop the tears from filling her eyes. He looked up at her. "My little angel..." Her heart trembled at the words. He began to speak. "Ever since the day I met you, I never imagined that the girl who dropped her books in front of me would one day become the person I'm most afraid of losing." Tears streamed down her cheeks. He continued, "Years have passed since that day, and every year has made me more certain of one thing." He drew a deep breath. "I don't want to live the years ahead without you." Then he held out his hand toward her. "Elena Morris... will you spend the rest of your life with me?" She couldn't answer immediately. She stood there looking at him, tears filling her eyes, while he waited without putting any pressure on her. Then she laughed through her tears and no

Another year passed. It was not an entirely peaceful year, but it was filled with little moments that made Elena and Alexander's relationship stronger.Elena graduated from university.Alexander became more settled in his work and began taking on greater responsibilities within his father's company. His family got to know her, and her name became a familiar presence in their home, as though she had been part of it for years. As for Elena's family, they had grown accustomed to Alexander being in her life. His appearances were no longer a surprise. They had become perfectly natural. As time passed, their relationship no longer needed an explanation.Everyone knew that Alexander and Elena belonged together in a way that could no longer be ignored. But Alexander was hiding something.Something he had been working on for weeks. One morning, Elena received a message from him."Be ready at six this evening."She stared at the screen in confusion, then typed,"Where are we going?"His reply c

Since then, something between them had changed. There had been no sudden confession. Neither of them had said any grand words to the other. But something quiet had found its way into the details of their lives, until each had become a natural part of the other's day. Elena knew when Alexander was busy. She could tell from the tone of his voice when he was tired. She knew he drank far too much coffee and forgot to eat whenever work kept him occupied. As for Alexander, he had come to know that Elena read in silence when something upset her, that she rolled the end of her pen between her fingers whenever she was thinking, and that she could never resist buying new books, even when she already had dozens she hadn't finished reading. They no longer needed to look for excuses to meet. Seeing each other had become a habit in itself. On some days, Alexander would wait for her at the university gates. On others, Elena would go to the library and find her favorite cup of coffee wait

About half an hour later, Elena returned from the kitchen carrying a small bowl of warm soup. She placed it in front of Alexander. "Eat this slowly." He looked at the bowl, then at her. "You made this yourself?" "Yes." "Are you sure it's safe to eat?" She raised an eyebrow. "If you're going to keep provoking me, I'll take it away and give it to some passerby instead. At least they'll be grateful for my effort." He quickly grabbed the spoon. "No, no. I'm extremely grateful." She sat in the chair opposite him. She watched as he took his first spoonful. "Well?" He paused. Then he said, "Good." She narrowed her eyes. "Just good?" He smiled. "Excellent, actually." "Much better." He continued eating the soup while she watched him quietly. After a few more spoonfuls, he began to look tired. He put down the spoon. "I can't finish it." Elena stood up. "All right. That's enough for now." She approached him. "But you need to rest." He nodded. She helped him stand, a
