AlecI kill the engine, and then make my way inside the house. With the clouds gathering in the sky, darkening it, it kind of feels like I’m stepping into a house of horrors. I brace myself for what’s to come, and even so, I’m not ready. Carla is in the living room. As I close the door, she stands up. Her eyes are a little wide, and she seems to take all of me in. Her eyes then widen, and she gasps, “Is that blood?”I realize that I still have Alpha Jason’s blood on my clothes. I look down at them absently, and then nod. “It’s a long story, but it isn’t mine.”I sound exhausted. I feel exhausted. I don’t know what it is about coming here that makes me feel so damn tired and done with it all. This is supposed to be my safe space; my home. The only place in the world where I feel like nothing can hurt me. But instead, I feel like this is the place where all my hauntings begin. “You haven’t been here in a few days,” Carla claims, getting to the point. “I understand that you’re upset b

Delaney My left leg hurts every time I put weight on it, but I have to keep moving. Francesca is ahead of me, racing to reach the car. Paola’s arm is draped over my shoulder, and my arm is hooked around her waist to keep her up. She constantly slumps forward like she’s going to pass out, but wakes up before she falls. “Just a little bit more,” Francesca says while clutching her side. Her clothes are drenched with her own blood, but she’s forcing herself to keep going. We’ve been hit hard. Harder than I thought we would, but at least we didn’t walk into it with false expectations. We knew what we would be getting ourselves into. It doesn’t make what happened hurt less, though. “Almost there,” Francesca pants before stopping and bending over to place her hands on her knees. I nearly bump into her, but I miss her by a few inches. I say to her encouragingly, “Keep going, Francesca. Don’t stop now. We’re almost there, as you said!”She nods, and then keeps going. Once the gates were

Delaney Connor is dead, and it’s all anyone can talk about. The others have been arriving over the course of a few days, but it was Pollux who gave us the news. He showed up the morning after we broke them out, and that’s how we found out that many of the fighters are still out there, hiding so they don’t get caught and draw attention to themselves and to the rest of us who are hiding. Cade is genuinely devastated by what’s happened. Connor was his brother, and I’ve since discovered that it’s a blessing to have a sibling in the rebellion with you. Most people have lost their families, for crying out loud. To have a relative is a blessing. Despite his grief, he hasn’t left Paola’s side. She’s not doing too well; she’s been seriously injured, and the healer fears that she might not be able to walk again. Silver was injected in her spine, and it’s been eating away at the bone, and there’s nothing we can do about it but wait for it to pass out of her system. The effects of silver are

AlecThe heavy wooden door creaks as I push it open, stepping into Alpha Fredrick’s office. When I received the call a few moments ago, I panicked. I always have this feeling like they’re going to find out that I had something to do with the attacks, which I did.But I have to come, I don’t have a choice. The room is dimly lit, the smell of old leather and polished oak filling the air. A group of people—mostly Fredrick’s advisors and some of the higher members of their pack—are already seated, their faces drawn and serious. Their eyes shift toward me as I enter, but they say nothing. The tension is thick, as if everyone in the room is holding their breath.Alpha Fredrick is standing behind his desk, his hands resting on the dark wood surface, watching a screen in front of him. The glowing light from the screen casts harsh shadows across his face. His expression is grim, his jaw clenched tightly. I step closer, the uneasy atmosphere making my pulse quicken.Alpha Fredrick says to me,

DelaneyOnce it’s after four in the morning, that’s when I decide to leave the house. There’s an exit that’s pretty well-guarded during the day but is neglected at night. The exit leads to the woods just outside the city, I believe, based on the maps I’ve seen in the library of this whole Underworld. I leave a note to let Paola and Pollux know that I’ll be back and that there’s something I need to take care of, and then I open the door carefully so I don’t make a sound. I have all the emergency phone numbers with me. If something happens, I’ll know who to call. I’m not as unprepared as I was the last time I had to go out there. I know that I didn’t inform any one of where I’m going, but if it’s not a threat to the rebellion or the Underworld, then why should I? It’s a personal matter. I can have a life outside of this, can’t I?As I’d predicted, the entrance is vacant. I don’t see a home guarding it. Usually, one needs permission to leave, but because I don’t have one as I doubt I’
