•Vera POV• “This is not good,” the doctor muttered as he finished checking my blood pressure and wrapped the stethoscope around his neck. “Your blood pressure is extremely high, and if it is not managed, it might lead to a high risk of health issues.” His voice kept getting more blurry as the pain in my chest grew worse than before. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t focus on what he was saying. All I could think about was my baby and where she might be now. I only got to hold her once. Just once. I didn’t even get a chance with her. I didn’t show her the love I had already built inside me long before she was born. How could someone take my baby, as if the world hadn’t been cruel to me enough already? Eric’s mother and Brooke having a child for Eric, and now my baby going missing barely a day after she was born. It felt like I was being punished for a crime I didn’t commit. Maybe my crime was marrying Eric. Maybe it was getting pregnant in the first place. “Is there any

•Vera POV• Juliet stepped closer to me and took my hand in hers. The warmth of her palm wrapped around mine, steady and familiar, the kind of comfort I would normally sink into without thinking. But today, that warmth only made my curiosity burn stronger. Her fingers tightened slightly, like she was bracing herself, and I knew whatever she was about to say wasn’t going to be light. "Vera, I don’t know how you’re going to take this," she said carefully, her eyes flicking toward Eric before coming back to me. "You’re starting to calm down, and if you continue like this your BP might go down." "I know, Jules," I muttered, giving her the look that said I wasn’t going to faint dramatically. "You care about my health. I get it. But I need to know if something is wrong. I need to know if something happened to my baby. If the cops haven’t found her yet, just say it." She sighed deeply, the sound leaving her chest like it had been sitting there for hours. "Vera… the cops found—" "Ou

•Vera POV• The rest of the week went by, and just like that, many more weeks passed, but there was no news regarding my baby. The police seemed to have stopped searching, and every time I asked Juliet the reason why, she refused to tell me what was going on and kept telling me not to worry. She said the police decided to keep the investigation secret so they could catch whoever did it. And based on the information they had gotten, the lady who took my baby was sent by someone. She was a good kidnapper and had a history of kidnapping babies from hospitals. They had been looking for her for years now. "This is the best news ever, Miss Watson," the doctor said as he did what he called the final checkup before I would be released from the hospital. "Your BP is normal now, but I’ll suggest you watch it because any overthinking can make it go up again, and it can be dangerous." "Thank you, doctor," I murmured, looking away from him at my mother, who was standing by the bed, staring a

•Vera POV• The ray of light coming from the window rested on my eyes, and I brushed my hand over my eyelids, turning to the side. I had been finding it difficult to sleep, and now that I had finally managed to close my eyes for a bit, I was woken up almost immediately. I slowly pushed myself up from the bed and stared at the window. The curtains were spread aside, allowing the morning light and soft breeze into the room. The air moved gently, lifting the edge of the curtain like nothing in the world was wrong. For a second, I felt the urge to walk over and shut it tightly, to block out the light, to block out the day. Then I remembered Eric had slept in the room with me. I turned toward his side of the bed. It was empty. The space beside me was cold. I swallowed and walked over to the window, ignoring the dull ache in my head as I pulled the curtains together properly. The room dimmed instantly. I stood there for a moment, my hand still holding the fabric, breathing slowly like

•Vera POV• “Oops, I think I just spilled the beans,” Brooke chuckled, her eyes roaming over Juliet and me in disgust before she turned to walk away. “It’s none of my business if you two kill each other, anyway. I’m the only one with Eric’s child that’s alive.” Her words hit me hard in the chest, but not as hard as the feeling that came when I looked at Juliet again. “What did Brooke say about my baby that you knew about?” I asked, my voice low. Juliet looked away from me. I saw the tears gather in her eyes. “I wanted to tell you, Vera. Several times I tried. But…” “But what?” My voice sounded strange, almost too calm, like I was trying to hold myself together in the middle of the street. “Why are you finding it hard to tell me, Jules? I thought we were supposed to be best friends. I thought you were supposed to have my back.” She looked at me again, and the tears rolled down her cheeks. She wiped them quickly with her palm. “I tried, Vera. I tried to tell you, but I jus
