Lloyd's POV“...and then, when I assumed it was over, the witch rose to her feet.” Zack's eyes sparkled as he described killing the witch that infiltrated his old pack. “I pointed the crossbow and shot. Straight arrow to the head.”“You didn't use a gun?” I asked him.His eyes widened at me a little. “You know bullets don't work on these things. The same way betas were banned from using guns here is the way it is there. Swords, Katana, or crossbows are approved.”“Yeah,” I affirmed. “Bullets aren't made of silver, so werewolves' quick healing helps them recover faster, dissolving the bullet within. And the witches, you gun wouldn't work at all.”“Tell me about it,” Zack leaned forward. “I've seen witches freeze bullets in the air. What the hell. It's as if the bullets respond to—” Zack's phone rang loudly, stopping him.“Excuse me, Alpha,” he pleaded. “I need to take this.”“Hello,” he answered.Enhanced hearing aided in hearing the other caller, a rich, educated voice. “Mr Biko, we

Lloyd’s POVFor a moment, I couldn’t believe my eyes. This was the hair I saw at the well and I didn’t tell Elora about it.I didn’t tell anyone about it.Right now, even if I tried to talk about it, I was going to look insane. I walked closer, picking a book and poking the hair for a moment, and nothing happened.I scoffed, wide eyed, when something happened. The floor I stood on rattled, and I jumped. The light glowed brighter, illuminating the area around my desk and desk chair. Heart pounding, I lunged for the door, but before I could make it past the couches, the door slammed shut with an earth-shattering bang.I froze, turning around to look at the light. It was growing larger.“Sorcery!” I yelled, before I turned back to the door. “Guards!”When I spun around and remembered the windows, every window in the room slammed shut in a quick slap, the curtains drawing themselves close of their own accord.I was close to shaking now, and there were no words to describe what I was exp

Elora’s POVI walked through the front door and closed it, pressing my back hard against it and closing my eyes. The vision of the group I saw in the circle replayed in my head.At this point, I’d grown tired of fighting it, so I let it play along the way it wanted. A sigh escaped me as a chime came from the grand clock in the living room.I pushed myself off the door, heading for the living room and crossing it for the stairs as I glanced at the wall clock.Sharp three in the morning.I dragged my feet along the stairs, clutching onto the railings with one hand and trying my best to stand straight as I walked.I staggered into the hallway, dragging my feet as I headed to the other side of the room. I grabbed the door handle and closed my eyes again. The vision was draining, and I had to walk that distance back home.If I left with a car or took a taxi, someone would be able to trail us, and Lloyd and I made a pact to keep the location of the vault secret. That meant no cars, no taxi

Elora’s POVI couldn't believe my ears. Lloyd suspects me.Leaving the Alpha house was a horrible plan.Right now, our trust in each other was on the line, and Lloyd was really going to put Xavier on my tail. But Xavier was a good man. He asked questions. He defended me through and through. He tried to make Lloyd see reason to talk to me. But Lloyd’s arrogance was his undoing. I see him pretending that he’s got it under control, even when everything is obviously falling apart, but he would never see it.We were in this mess because he didn’t listen to me when I warned him not to invite the Unanimous Assembly.I’d also warned him about Zack, but he also thinks that he’s got that under control, too. I couldn’t believe that his trust was that fragile. I’d just arrived at the Alpha house that morning, and because of my frequent absenteeism, I’d decided to spend some time in the house.I thought we could have a conversation on the way forward in the fight against sorcery and prosecuting

Elora’s POVWhen I walked through the gate, I overheard the Alpha talking with a voice I recognized, but I couldn’t remember the owner.I headed towards the corner that led to the entrance when I almost stumbled into them, realizing the owner of the second voice.Elder Rhys. Before the stairs, Lloyd said he'd like to restore the system of mages. My heart leapt. That was the best news of the century. It would allow people like Kael to get out of hiding and be able to move about freely, and at the same time, it would allow me to give in to my magic. It would give us a fighting chance against shadows, if we ever have a chance to encounter them. This was a real fighting chance. Every nerve in me jubilated. I was about to make the corner when the elder’s words stopped me.He didn’t think it was a good idea. I watched them ascend the stairs to the entrance before they disappeared inside, with the elder rambling on about Lloyd’s father and his decisions.I made the corner and headed towards
