Elora's POVI scanned the crowd of necks heading towards the vortex, looking for a neck with a snake tattoo, and I failed. I was as if the person I was looking for didn’t exist.I saw some with a couple of tattoos. I saw a star first, then a text “HAT’, then an “S”I would have assumed the ‘S’ was it, but it was on the neck of a man. Klaus said I should look out for a woman. What if his sources were wrong? What if he made a mistake? The flow of the crowd swayed us this way and that way as he approached the vortex, and soon, it ceased to be a straight line. Everyone was in a hurry to make it to the ‘final destination’ as they called it.For a moment, I thought about Lloyd. He stated he had followed us all the way to this place. I wondered if he was going to follow us through the vortex. How was he going to do it? He didn’t have a mask and a cloak, so he would be easily recognized. I made up my mind to trust him and hope he would come up with a plan. Davina held my hand tight, pul

Elora's POVWe stood aside as the woman went up to her throne and sat, looking at us like we were merely a disturbance before her. For a moment, there was deafening silence. The man beside me grew uncomfortable, wriggling his fingers by his side. I gave him a brief glance. On the other side, Davina remained stoic, like she was angry at the woman on the throne. We knew who Morgeaus was, and even if we didn’t have a face, we knew at least that she runs the Crimson Circle. All we need is a workable plan and a strategy that will help us catch her.She lifted her hand and snapped a finger, and in that moment, two men came forward. One carried a tablet of stone, and the other had a calabash half-filled with blood. Both men approached us, stopping before the man beside me. I reached out to Davina behind me.“Are we supposed to be doing this?” I asked. “Doesn’t this get us tied with them?”“It’s a heart game, Elora,” Davina replied in my head. “As far as your heart is not with them, you’ll

Elora's POVGetting to Laura's restaurant was a quick drive in a drizzle. As I passed through the door, I threw my umbrella into the umbrella holder by the door, and I took a quick note of my surroundings. Nothing much had changed from my last visit—including Laura serving alongside her employees.I took a slow walk across the tables scattered all over the place, occupied, when Laura, who had just handed a customer a drink, looked up to see me. She didn't smile like she usually would on a normal day—her shoulders went tense and her face was a bit whiter than usual.“You're okay there,” I said as I approached her.She shrugged. “I'm fine, I guess.”“You can talk to me, Laura,” I urged her.She pressed her lips into a thin line, taking a subtle glance around. The way she subtly shifted in her stance told me she was scared. I was trying to imagine what could rattle Laura like this. She always had it together. After a moment of a rather long, uncomfortable silence, Laura grabbed my han

Elora's POVThe call came two hours after I was awake. When I saw my buzzing phone with Laura’s name on the screen, I assumed there could be trouble. I stared at the phone for a moment, my finger tracing the rim of a chipped mug before I got myself to pick it up at the last moment.“If you’re calling to tell me something has gone wrong,” I said. “You could have just sent a text instead.”Her voice came quickly, chipped and breathless. “The man agreed.”“What?” I straightened.“C’mon Elora,” she snapped. “You know what. He’s going to bring the pendant. Your suggestion worked. But he said he’s not going to move unless his pocket is lined with gold.”“Wouldn’t expect anything less,” my finger wrapped around the mug tighter. “How much are we talking about?”A sigh came from the other side of the line. “A lot.”I held the rage that threatened to rise within me. Laura was fond of trying to tamper with the weight of issues, even when it’s not her business. “Laura, should I remind you that

Elora's POV“What should I tell them?” Ragnar asked me.I didn’t want him to freak out or lose control, so I thought sending him away while I had some time to think would be a good idea.“Uh… Ragnar, I’ve got this. You should ensure that there’s no chaos in the assembly hall,” I told him. “Return when you’re done.”He nodded and left the kitchen.I pulled my phone as soon as his footsteps faded into the distance and pulled out my call log, staring at Lloyd’s contact for a moment. I’m sure he must be dealing with whoever the Ashen pendant dealership was, but at the same time, we need to do something over here. With him absent, the Unanimous assembly might find probable cause to file for his impeachment, and the Crimson Circle would maximize that kind of situation to their advantage. I need to act fast, and I need to do it quickly.Drawing in a sharp breath, I dialled his number. He needed to be here, even if that meant I had to replace him at the restaurant. The line went straight t
