Janet’s jaw tightened, but when she looked down at Emily again, her smile returned, though now it was sharp, almost predatory. “Well then,” Janet said lightly, her voice dripping with false cheer, “shall we go explore, sweetheart?” Emily beamed and nodded eagerly. She skipped beside Janet, clutching her small backpack strap. At first, Janet played the part perfectly. She pointed out the different departments, leaned down so Emily could see rows of employees typing away at their computers, and even let her press the button that opened the conference room doors. Employees fawned over Emily, showering her with compliments, and Emily laughed happily, waving her tiny hand at them all. But with each smile Emily received, something in Janet twisted tighter, darker.
