Eliana's POV As Professor Matthews prepared his things before addressing the class, I kept my eyes on him, watching his every movement. How could he look so peaceful after what he did? The other day, he'd come to class looking as if he had just taken an innocent person’s life. And I had felt a modicum of satisfaction knowing that he was troubled. But now that he seemed to be in a better state of mind, I felt as if that sense of satisfaction had been stolen from me. Ripped away even. Done with his preparations, he adjusted his tie and walked to the edge of the platform so he could face the class squarely. “Good morning, class.” He smiled, his eyes sweeping the auditorium. That smile, the smile that usually made me experience butterflies, further added to the hatred I was beginning to feel for him. He went on. “Judging from the looks on your faces, I think I can say I'm not the only one that had a spectacular weekend. Well, weekend's over and we're back to work. First, I would like

Derrick's POV Annabelle Thorne surprised me. Our conversation had been brief and easy but what surprised me was that she had agreed to meet me at all. I'd seen her moving around with Eliana and I knew she was my best bet if I wanted to get across to her. Although her attention was mostly directed at the boys playing on the court, she was responsive enough and she answered most of my questions. “When do you think I will be able to talk to her?” I asked her, ready to go. She didn't answer for a few seconds, her eyes still focused on the court. I could see that she had her attention on one boy in particular. Then she turned to me and said, “I’ll let you know after I talk to her.” “Alright then.” I looked around the court before I stood up, in case anyone might be watching, and my eyes fell on her. My heartbeat sped up instantly and I remained glued to where I was seated, suddenly unable to use my legs. She was fixed to where she stood and the look on her face was that of pure shock

Derrick's POV I looked in the rearview mirror for the fifth time in two minutes. Still nothing. I glanced back at the screen of my phone. Her last text was eight minutes ago. It was the day after Annabelle had informed me that she had agreed to talk to me and I had gotten to her apartment building at exactly nine p.m, as we had discussed. Was she no longer coming? Was this some sort of payback for what I did to her? If it was, then it was too petty and too minimal compared to the gravity of what I did. Tapping my fingers on the steering wheel, I kept my gaze on the screen of my phone. I could feel my heart racing in my chest. Once more, I glanced in the rearview mirror. The street was the same way it had been a few minutes ago. What made my wait irritating was having to deal with the bright light coming from the streetlights. Other cars had taken up nearly all the parking spaces by the road and the only one I could find put me directly in the center of the yellow light from the

Eliana's POV There was silence in the car. Professor Matthews held gaze for a few seconds, then it was his turn to stare straight ahead. I decided to give him whatever time he needed to collect his thoughts. If whatever explanation he gave after that had any element of lies in them, then that would be the end of me and him. Permanently. He spoke after almost ten seconds, his eyes still focused on the darkness ahead of us. “I had a thing with her a few months back.”“Be specific,” I demanded. “We were involved.” His eyes finally met mine and they flickered as he spoke. “I know how this sounds but I can promise you that I'm not some predator that's preying on my students. I'm not.”Predator. Same words Oliver had used. He went on. “What I had with Tasha was totally different from what I have with you now.”I arched my brows in question. “Go on. I want to know everything.”He opened his mouth, then he shut it and sighed. “Tasha wasn't really my student. I did teach her but that was on

Eliana's POV Professor Matthews brought the car to a stop but he left the engine running. A police car parked directly behind us and my heart started racing in my chest. Professor Matthews placed his hand over mine. “Stay calm. We didn't do anything wrong.”A lanky uniformed policeman appeared beside his window and tapped on the glass. Professor Matthews rolled the window down and smiled at the officer. “Good evening, Officer. Was I going too fast?”“Something like that,” the man replied, bending his head low to look into the car. “License and registration, please.”“Sure,” Professor Matthews said. He opened his glove compartment and produced some papers which he handed over to the man. The policeman went over them carefully, then he handed it back to him.“Do you know how fast you were driving?” He asked.Professor Matthews gave him a friendly smile. “Uh, maybe fifty?” The man clearly didn't find him amusing. “You were doing fifty-nine in a forty zone. Do you know how dangerous th
