EVELESSA"Move now" a voice snaps from somewhere around me.I'm back at the dance rehearsal studio with Alexis, Alexander and Aretha; people stare at us at all points in curiosity. There are mirrors everywhere which helps us study our forms while dancing, my body moves effortlessly as the music comes on.I feel sweat come off my skin as I dance but I ignore all distractions, this place, this activity is when I'm most balanced without any fear or confusion but complete peace.Alexis stands a bit farther to me with her arms folded as she silently observes everywhere and everyone while Aretha is stretching with Alexander. Rehearsals are intense and going steady until I smell the phony perfume smell indicating the presence of Mara. She struts in wearing an all too revealing leggings, a crop top too open in front. "Well, the entire school has been buzzing non stop all day so I needed to see what all the buzz was about."The music stops. The room goes quiet.I turn slowly. She’s dressed l

CASSAIN I’m halfway down when I feel her discomfort, I look up and there he is.Professor Kane.Standing too close to Evelessa. She’s backed near the lockers, arms folded, face calm but tight around the edges. Alexis is a few steps away, watching, ready to move. Alexander’s jaw is locked.Kane is smiling.I hate that smile.“You don’t have to rush off,” Kane says, voice low, casual. “I was just thinking we could talk about your performance. One-on-one.”Evelessa answers evenly. “I’m late for class.”“I’m sure you can spare a minute to talk to me” he says, stepping closer. That’s when I step in.I place myself between them. The hallway goes quiet.“Kane,” I say calmly. He stiffens. “Cassain. This is between a professor and a student.”I look at him slowly. “No,” I say. “It’s between you and a very bad decision.”His smile tightens. “I’m not doing anything wrong.”I lean in just enough that only he hears me.“You’re standing too close,” I say softly. “Your tone is wrong and your inte

EVELESSA "What's going on here?, why are they all running?"It's been a whole day since Cassain left, he's been so occupied that it's by midmorning that I get a text from him. Getting to school, in class, the scratching of pens fills the room like insects crawling inside my skull. We've got mid term test in History meant to be for two hours, I sit straight, eyes on my paper, but I feel Professor Kane silently observing me in the same creepy way he always does.I shift uncomfortably in my seat as I look through the questions: Explain the political impact of post-war councils on monarchic systems.I almost laugh. If only they knew.My pen moves faster than my thoughts as I easily give my answers, making sure to include dates and names but that’s when the weight of his stare hits me again and I glance up catching Kane standing at the front of the room, pretending to read something on his tablet, but his eyes remained locked on me. I frown and swallow.Alexis sits two rows ahead of me

CASSAIN "Can you please stop pacing your highness?"I don’t stop as I continue pacing back and forth at an event with the music bleeding in from the main hall like a bad headache.Lucian watches me from near the bar, arms folded, expression calm in that irritating way of his. He’s pretending everything is fine. I know better.“I should be home,” I say for the fifth time.Lucian sighs. “You’re at a diplomatic event, Cass. Walking out will raise questions.”“I don’t care about questions,” I snap. “I care about Evelessa.”A server passes by. I don’t even see them.“She hasn’t replied in an hour,” I add, jaw tight. “An hour.”Lucian checks his watch. “You left two days ago.”“And everything has gone to hell in two days,” I shoot back, turning on him. “Tell me how that makes sense.”He doesn’t answer immediately. My steps slow. “Lucian.”He straightens. “The men watching her father’s office are all dead.” he says carefully. “How,” I ask quietly.“Professional hit, it was very clean and f

EVELESSA Mara’s shoot is loud, chaotic and messy even before I even step fully inside. People are scattered everywhere trying to make something out of the present mess. Mara is in the middle of it all, raised on a platform, dressed in something expensive and tiny, giving fake poses before the camera. The moment she spots me, her lips curl in disdain. “Well, look who crawled out of Cassain’s shadow,” she says loudly enough for everyone to hear. The room goes silent immediately. I keep walking towards her with no reaction. That annoys her more than anything. “Careful,” she continues, stepping down from the platform. “This isn’t your little dance studio. You can’t just—” I stop right in front of her. Close enough to see the fear flicker behind her eyes. “You talk a lot,” I say calmly. “Must be exhausting being you.” She laughs, sharp and fake. “What? Planning to cry? Or call your king?” I simply slap her before she could get the next word in. The sound cracks
