ADRIAN Sophia kept glancing at me on the ride back to the house. Her fingers clenched and unclenched on her lap as if she was physically restraining herself from touching me. Not that I would have minded anyway. If anything, a small part of me craved her touch. I needed her to get over the barrage of emotions threatening to drown me. Cars brushed past ours in a blur of movement. Mom’s words reechoed in my head, and I let out a soft breath. If anyone could get Dad to change his mind, it was her. But sometimes, the man was too stubborn and listened to no one. “What happened back there?” she whispered. “You were different. I guess I have to thank you for speaking up for me.”I took her hand and pl

ADRIAN I stood in the same spot until the last echo faded. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, and no matter how hard I tried to keep them in check, they didn’t stop coming.Footsteps broke through my reverie, and I straightened up. Sophia walked into the living room, her eyes darting to the door. “Is he gone?” “I thought I told you not to come out,” I murmured. She flashed me a small smile, closing the distance to wrap her arms around my middle. My anger faded as fast as it came. “Sorry.” Her voice was a whisper. “What did he say?”

SOPHIA Adrian was stunned. He laughed, but when I didn’t, he sobered up. Pulling his hand free from mine, he stepped back.“Your treat?” he muttered, and I nodded. “Sophia, you’ve not resumed work. I wouldn’t want your finances to be—”“Oh, hush. . .” I told him. He made fair points, but I could spare some cash. Besides, I hadn’t spent since he brought me into his home. I still had some of the money Marc gave me back then. “Who says I’m taking you to a five-star restaurant?”Adrian’s head fell back with a laugh that went straight to my heart. Without giving him a chance to argue further, I walked out of his office, hoping that he would follow me.

SOPHIA As soon as the answer was out of Adrian’s lips, I tugged him away from the beach. Our destination was a small, quiet, single-story beach house fifty yards down the coast. The place had multiple rooms, which were usually rented to tourists or visitors. I’d already paid for one night. So when Adrian mumbled, “Where exactly are we going?”“You’ll see,” was my reply. The moment we stepped into the beach house, I went to the receptionist. At the mention of my name, the lady slid a key across the counter to me. Adrian scoffed, and I hid a small smile, dragging him toward the staircase. Floral had been excited when I mentioned a date to her. She suggested this place, and I booked it onlïne without help. For now, she didn’t know how far Adrian and I had gone, but I knew she suspected it was pretty serious. As soon as we entered the room, the cool air welcomed us. The room was quiet, thick with the scent of salt and old wood. He shut the door behind us, and everything slowed. Like

SOPHIAI woke up reaching for warmth, but my hand slid across cool sheets instead. I stayed there, my eyes still closed, and my breathing shallow, all the while waiting for the familiar weight of him beside me. Waiting for an arm to tighten around my waist, for a kiss to the forehead or to my temple.  I was waiting for something—anything that would tell me my deepest fear hadn’t manifested. But nothing happened. I opened my eyes, and reality hit too soon. Adrian’s side of the bed was untouched. The pillows on his side were undisturbed. There was no indentation, no lingering heat, just an absence that went straight to my heart. Maybe he woke up early again today. Most times, he was always up before me. I lis
