Austin’s POVThe moon was high, silver light washing over the trees outside the window. Inside the cabin, it was quiet with just the sound of soft, steady breathing.Ruby lay against me, her cheek resting on my chest, one arm draped lazily across my stomach. Her skin was warm, her heartbeat slow. I hadn’t moved for over an hour, afraid to wake her. She needed sleep. After the night we’d just had, hours tangled in each other’s arms, she needed rest more than anything. And she was finally asleep, peaceful in my arms. But I couldn’t sleep. Something felt off.At first, it was subtle, a faint shift in the air, a drift of an unfamiliar scent through the trees. But my instincts wouldn’t let it go.I was a werewolf. I didn’t need a full moon to know when danger was close. And whatever it was... it was getting closer. But then it sharpened.A mutant. Not just a shifter. A rogue. And it wasn’t far. Somewhere near the party.I clenched my jaw. Of course, one would come tonight. With so many pa

Ruby’s POV“Come for a walk with me,” Austin said quietly.I didn’t answer right away. I just stared at him, unsure if I’d heard him right. After everything that had happened, after leaving me to wake up alone with no message or explanation? I didn’t know what to believe anymore. A part of me wondered if he was playing with me. If this was just some kind of cruel joke. But he didn’t look like someone who was joking. His eyes weren’t teasing, and there was no smirk on his lips. Just a calm, serious look. And even though my brain screamed at me to walk away, my heart betrayed me.“Alright,” I whispered. We walked quietly, side by side. The path behind the training field led us to the small garden tucked between two buildings. It was calm there. A light breeze passed through the trees, and for a moment, it felt like we were the only two people in the world.Austin stopped near a flowerbed and shoved his hands in his pockets. He stared at the ground for a second, then slowly turned towar

Austin’s POVI was sitting alone in the dark, half a bowl of popcorn on my lap, pretending that some loud action movie could drown out the mess in my head. But the truth was, no amount of gunfire or cheesy one-liners could distract me from the fact that I’d hurt her but I wanted her. Then the door slammed open.Sally came floating in, arms wrapped around Ruby’s limp body. Her dress was torn at the sleeve, her expression pale and panicked. But it was the sight of her face, her skull half exposed from whatever attack she’d just been through, that made me jump to my feet.“What the hell—Sally?” My voice cracked. “What happened?”“She’s been drugged,” Sally said quickly, out of breath even though she didn’t need to breathe. “At the club. Someone tried to take her. I got there too late.”My heart stopped.Ruby’s head lolled against her shoulder, and her skin was drenched in cold sweat. Her lips were parted, dry and pale, and her body twitched slightly like she was fighting something from t

Austin’s POVI hadn’t slept at all. My body was exhausted, but since the day before I had been restless. My mind wouldn’t shut off after seeing Ruby like that. Scared. Shaken. Curling into me like I was the only solid thing she could hold on to.I’d held her all night, even after she drifted off. It felt… right. But she left before I could say anything that mattered. I wish I had stopped her from leaving. I’d just closed my eyes, hoping for an hour of rest, when Sally burst into the room.“She’s gone,” she said quickly. “Something’s wrong.”I sat up instantly. “Ruby?”Sally nodded, her expression unusually tight. “I saw her this morning. She went to a gun shop outside town. Bought a weapon. Then she and Rebecca packed up camping gear and drove off.”I was on my feet before she finished. “Where did they go?”“I’m not sure yet,” Sally said. “But it’s serious. I followed them for a bit, then circled back to check her place and found this.”She held out a folded newspaper, creased at the

Ruby’s POV“Matt,” I said, barely above a whisper. “Run. Go back to camp and get Austin.”He didn’t move. His eyes were locked on the glowing yellow ones staring back at us from the trees. My hands trembled slightly, but I kept the gun aimed steady.“Go!” I snapped. “Now!”Matt still hesitated. “No, I’m not leaving you out here alone with that thing—”I turned the gun on him. “I’m serious, Matt. Run, or I swear I’ll shoot you in the leg and you'd drag yourself back to camp.”That got him moving. He cursed under his breath and took off toward the tents, crashing through branches like an idiot. But at least he was gone.I turned back toward the creature. The yellow eyes blinked once, then stepped forward. My breath caught. It was huge. Towering. Covered in matted brown fur with shoulders that looked wide enough to crush me. Its growl rumbled through the trees like a warning.I didn’t wait.I pulled the trigger. The shot echoed through the forest, and the beast dropped with a thud.I sto
