ELLISI still didn’t know what to do with that memory. It had been rolling around in my mind all week like a forgotten item in a coat pocket, real and specific and undeniably mine, but still unexplained. If Julian were anyone else, I could’ve filed it under crowd participation, sports entertainment, meaningless. But he wasn’t anyone else, and I had long since stopped being able to label anything about him as meaningless, and the more I tried, the clearer it became that my filing system was broken. What kind of person kisses another person in front of a crowd and then goes home to wait in a dark apartment, climbing into bed with them days later and laughing like everything was easy? And more importantly: what kind of person kept thinking about it?That familiar tightness in my chest came back, and I let it, because fighting it had become more exhausting than just accepting it.Beside me, Julian shifted, a small movement, just enough to remind me that the space between us was a defined

JULIAN The realization was nothing new to Julian. He’d known for two years of his life and it was just until a few weeks ago at the frat party, that he felt he could actually do something about it.It should have been alarming when he realized he had fallen for that mean barista boy. The few who knew him, the handful that understood him at any real depth, would have found it... kinda alarming.Julian Cross usually didn’t allow himself to get "gone" for anyone. He was too careful for that. Too used to keeping an appropriate distance from anything that had the potential to cost him something even when having sex with it.But right now, sitting in the dark with Ellis’s breathing finally steady beside him, it felt inevitably embarrassing. For years, he’d built walls around himself that had turned out to be pretty sturdy. People rarely got close enough to even matter. Most relationships felt like they were transactional, pleasant and manageable, based around what each party wanted from th

ELLIS The first thing I felt when I woke up was warmth. Not the usual kind of warmth, the kind you get after piling on enough blankets to feel somewhat cozy. Nope, this was a deep, suspiciously pleasant warmth that suggested I’d had a really good night’s sleep, and my body was entirely pleased about it in a way that surprised me. And why is that weird, you ask? I think it’s because I hadn’t slept that well since I was a fucking preteen. For a few blissful seconds, I lingered in that dreamlike space between sleep and wakefulness, where consciousness hasn’t fully taken hold yet. My body felt great. There was no tension in my muscles, no aches from carrying too much for too long. My mind wasn’t already gearing up for the day ahead, calculating sleep hours, to-do lists, and the usual panic about being short on time. Honestly, it was so unusual that I should’ve recognized it as a warning sign. But then I made the huge mistake of opening my eyes. Consciousness hit me all

ELLISHe chuckled, and I pointed at him speechlessly. We both stared at each other with that energy two people share when they know they’re treading a familiar path and are doing it anyway. Then, almost simultaneously, we burst into laughter. The sound caught me off guard, my own laughter, showing up unannounced when I hadn’t even meant to laugh. It was one of those genuine moments, too tired to care about dignity.Julian was laughing as well, softly, the real kind and the absurdity of the situation was just too much. For about ten seconds, we couldn’t stop.Eventually, the laughter faded. The room settled back into its calm state, and morning reasserted itself.I dressed for class on autopilot, my brain busy elsewhere...halfway through buttoning my shirt when I noticed something.I stopped, my hands frozen on the buttons.Something had shifted. Standing there in my room, I tried to wrap my head around it. My body felt different, or rather, it didn’t feel like the usual morning-weight

ELLISThe issues with finally getting a good night’s sleep after months fueled by caffeine, stubbornness, and various poor life choices came with a catch: my body was all too aware of the change. And once it realized what was happening, there was no way to go back; it had experienced real rest and now acted like a tiny tyrant, demanding attention and completely disregarding my dignity, denial, and emotional barriers. It seemed my body had turned traitor. That was the only explanation I could come up with. Because all day long, even after everything that transpired that morning, from flinging Julian off the bed like a goddamn human catapult to the loud thud that echoed through the apartment, not to mention almost giving us both a heart attack before we could even sip our coffee...one persistent thought kept looping in my mind like a catchy song I couldn’t shake off.I slept well.Every time it popped up, I tried to shove it down. But it resurfaced. I really slept well.I silently wonde
