ELLISLife really has a way of surprising you.The apartment was dark, save for the city light filtering through the windows, soft and gray, indifferent to my crisis. My feet led me toward Julian’s bed long before my brain could come up with a better plan, which it had clearly been struggling to do for a while.I paused. This was ridiculous, embarrassing. Possibly career-ending... for a job I didn’t even have yet but could one day develop just for this to ruin it.But I couldn’t sleep, and that fact was stubbornly, frustratingly true no matter how much dignity I tried to apply to the situation. With a resigned sigh, I reached out, touching his shoulder gently. Nothing happened. The guy slept like there was no alarm in his system.I shook him a bit harder. "Julian."A quiet sound escaped him, not quite a word, just the protest of someone being pulled from a cozy dream. Then another noise, and slowly he blinked awake, disoriented in the dark, his gaze landing on my face then drifting do

ELLISI lifted his arm an inch, paused, and waited.Nothing, good.Slowly, I slipped out from under it and froze when he shifted in his sleep. My heart stuttered for a second, but he only made a quiet sound and settled back into his slumber. I exhaled, relieved like someone who had just defused a bomb.I had now developed the fear of him catching me sneaking away from his bed and pulling me back to his arms...Victory. Quiet, unexpected, and kind of silly victory. Our dorm in Pinnacle Hall was peaceful as I padded toward the kitchen. Morning light poured through the windows, golden and relaxed, while outside, the city buzzed to life. Cars flowed along the street, people hustling to wherever. Inside, everything felt slower.Comfortable.This was what home felt like.Today felt like a proper breakfast day. Not cereal eaten over the sink or coffee accompanied by regret. An actual meal, made with some care.I tied on the apron hanging by the stove and got to work. Eggs, toast, thinly slic

ELLISMy mouth went dry. "Oh."Oh no.She moved closer, slowly, her hips swaying as she approached. The nervous smile on her face stirred something in my stomach because she was putting herself out there, vulnerable and ready."Is this okay?" she asked softly, stopping right in front of me.Before I could answer, she climbed onto my lap, straddling me. Her thighs pressed warmly against mine as she settled in.Her hands slid up my chest, fingers curling into my shirt as she leaned in close. I could feel her warmth through the lace, the softness of her breasts pressing against me with every breath."We’ve been together for over a month," she whispered, her voice sultry. "You’ve been such a gentleman... never pushing, never rushing me for sex like other guys. I really appreciate that."Her lips brushed my ear. "But I want you, Ellis. I’ve wanted you for so long."And then she kissed me.It started soft, her warm lips on mine, her tongue teasing for a way in. When I parted my lips, the ki

ELLISOf course Julian was. The man was as persistent as a raccoon that had found a trash can with a faulty lock and wasn’t going to be deterred by my refusal to engage.I was dumb to think he’d give up that easily.I focused intensely on a plate that didn’t need this much attention. "Go away.""No.""At least I appreciate the consistency.""You’re welcome."I rolled my eyes and scrubbed harder. A few seconds passed. Then I felt his fingers closing gently around my wrist.I froze and almost dropped the plate. Not because it was forceful, quite the opposite. His grip was light and careful, warm, his thumb brushing once against my skin in a small, casual, comforting motion. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that should have meant anything at all.But my body immediately became aware of it like he’d had flipped a switch or something and of the steady warmth radiating from where his hand rested. And then...once again, at the worst possible moment, my brain tossed out a comparison I wasn’t ready f

ELLISA weak laugh escaped her, brittle and unconvinced. "Honestly, I was starting to think you might be a virgin. Wait, are you?"My eyes widened. "I’m not," I blurted out before I could even think.Pamela blinked. "Oh."The silence that followed was somehow worse than the one before it."Well." She looked away, anywhere but at me. "That actually... makes this worse.""Pamela—""Because now I really don’t get it." she ran her hands through her hair in frustration. "Then why did you run off like that?"The guilt returned, stronger this time, settling somewhere deeper inside me, hard to shake off."I...I wasn’t trying to hurt you," I said."I know." Her reply came too quickly, the speed of someone who’d been up all night convincing herself of that very thing. "I know you’re not that kind of person, Ellis. You could barely hurt a fly..."That made it worse somehow. Because she was right. I wasn’t trying to hurt her. Yet here I was, doing exactly that, time and again, through distraction
