(Richard’s POV)I gripped the steering wheel so hard my fingers began to throb. The leather of the steering felt like peeling off my skin, but my palms were dripping with sweat. I tried to focus on the road ahead, but I couldn't focus properly. It kept sliding away, blurring like a messy water fall. ‘What is happening to me?’ I wondered. My head felt incredibly heavy. As I drove, the board lights smeared into long, neon streaks across the glass.I hadn't swallowed a single drop of that wine at my mother’s house. I hadn't even touched the water, but yet, the air in that dining room had been something else, something wasn’t just feeling right. Now, that sweet, sickly smell of vanilla candles was lodged deep in the back of my throat. I have been inhaling it ever since dinner. It tasted like a lie and deception that I should have seen coming the moment I walked through my mother's front door.‘She did it,’ I thought as my stomach grumbled. I gasped and couldn't breathe properly. It be

Richard's POVScreeeeecchhhhh!!!!The sound of my tires tearing against the gravel was the only thing louder than the frantic pounding in my chest right now. I didn’t care about the expensive rubber tires I was burning off or the midnight peace of Oakhaven. I was shattered. My only focus was the woman sitting inside that mansion, the woman I used to call Mother.I shoved the car door open and stumbled out. My hair was a disaster, plastered to my forehead with sweat and the bottled water I’d used to force myself awake. My suit was totally ruined, smelling of a damp alleyway and that suffocating, sickly sweet vanilla. My head was still spinning from the sedative she’d hidden in those candles, but the fury in my gut acted like a lightning bolt, keeping me upright.I marched to the front door and threw it open with such force, the heavy wood hit against the interior wall. This wasn't a home anymore, but one filled with lies, and I was done being the silent observer."Mother!" I roared

(Oma’s Pov)The door of the San Diego jail room opened. It seemed a new visitor was around.I sat at the small plastic table, my heart racing very fast. Every time that door moved, I expected a new nightmare. I expected a detective to walk in and tell me I was going to prison for the next twenty years. I expected a social worker to tell me I would never hold my baby girl again. The air in here smelled like cheap bleach, and this orange jumpsuit felt like sandpaper against my skin. But when the visitor walked in, I was shocked as my breath caught in my throat. It wasn't a guard, it wasn’t my lawyer, Ned, not even Richard…. It was Nora. She looked beautiful, like she had just stepped off the cover of a luxury magazine, without a single hair out of place. Her blonde hair was smooth and shiny, her makeup was flawless, and her blue dress probably cost a fortune. As she walked across the room, her heel clicked on the pavement.I gripped the edge of the bolted-down table so hard, and I p

Richard's POVOut of the prison, I drove straight to Nora's apartment.I didn't call ahead because I didn't want her to be prepared. The city was dark and wet in the night, where the streetlights bled orange across the slick pavement, and I pushed the car hard through every yellow light, fuming in frustration. The anger from the prison visit hadn't left me yet, just filled with frustration right now. First from my mother, now Nora.As I drove ahead, Nora's building came into view which was one of those glass towers in the estate, the kind of structure that cost more than most people earned in a year. I used to know this address by heart because I used to come here for different reasons while we had something going, anyways I pushed that thought away before it could settle in my mind.I arrived, parked my range rover in the car lot and headed toward Nora's door.I shouldn't have been doing this, but I had to. I came to the door and knocked. No answer.I knocked again. Then she answer

( Richard's POV)Ned called me at noon after we came back from the hospital."Your mother's attorney reached out," he said. "There's a group of old money, European investors coming to the family house tonight, who your father has partnered with in business before. They want your signature on a partnership extension before the court hearing on Friday and your mother says it can't wait." He said.I was sitting at my desk staring at the video clip on my phone that they sent while listening to him on the phone."Tell her I'll think about it," I said."Richard, if you don't show, she'll use it against you in court. She'll say you abandoned your responsibilities as the acting head of your father's company."I put the phone down and rubbed my eyes. I hadn't even slept well. Not even an hour. I had dropped Naomi and the baby at home just before sunrise, stood in the shower for twenty minutes staring at the tiles, then driven straight to my office because my bed felt like the last place I dese
