CHAPTER 31 POV: Mia Three weeks after the verdict the campus had settled into its new shape. Dane’s name removed from the faculty board outside the law building, she’d walked past it Tuesday morning and noticed the blank rectangle where the nameplate had been. Clean. Final. The specific absence of something that had occupied space for too long. She’d texted Ryder a photo of it. He’d replied with two words: “Good riddance.” She’d smiled at her phone for longer than was dignified. The new normal looked like this! His key in her lock at seven most mornings. Coffee already made when she came out of the bedroom because he woke earlier and had decided that making coffee was a reasonable use of the time. His books migrating slowly from his apartment to hers, not announced, just appearing, the quiet accumulation of a person who had decided where he wanted to be. Her dissertation moving faster than it had in months. His postgraduate application submitted to the faculty on a Wednesday

CHAPTER 33 POV: Mia The call from his mother came on a Sunday. She was in the kitchen. He was on the sofa reading, the comfortable Sunday quiet they’d built without deciding to, the kind that required nothing from either of them except presence. She heard his voice change. Not dramatically. Just, a specific shift in register that she’d learned meant something had arrived that required his full attention. She kept making tea. Gave him the call. When he came to the kitchen doorway five minutes later she knew before he said anything. His face. Not bad news, not the grief quality, not the tight jaw of something difficult. Something more complicated. The specific expression of a person being pulled in a direction they hadn’t anticipated. “My mother,” he said. “I heard.” She turned. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing wrong.” He leaned against the doorframe. “She’s…. she’s been asked to speak. At a legal symposium in Cape Town. About my father’s case. About what the investigation means fo

CHAPTER 35 POV: Mia The results came on a Tuesday. She’d been told to expect them between ten and noon. She’d been awake since 7AM, not anxiously, just present in the way of someone whose body had decided the day was significant before their brain had confirmed it. Ryder had his first postgraduate seminar at 9AM. He’d left early, dressed differently than usual, she’d noticed. The same quality of clothing but worn with a different intention. The specific way a person dresses when they’re about to walk into a room and be responsible for what happens in it. She’d stood in the kitchen and watched him check his notes. “You’re nervous,” she said. “I’m prepared,” he said. “Those aren’t mutually exclusive.” He looked up. At her face. The corner of his mouth moved. “Mildly,” he said. “Mildly nervous.” “Good,” she said. “It means you care about it.” He’d looked at her for a moment. Then crossed the kitchen. Kissed her, warm, brief, deliberate. “Call me,” he said against her mou

CHAPTER 37POV: RyderThe call came on a Wednesday. He was between seminars, the specific twenty minutes of corridor time he’d started using to decompress between sessions, to let the thinking of one room clear before the next one filled it.Unknown number. Local area code.He answered.“Mr. Holt.” A woman’s voice. Measured, professional, the specific tone of someone who made calls like this regularly and had learned to lead with clarity. “My name is Dr. Irene Asante. I’m the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Meridian University.”He stopped walking.Meridian was not his university.Meridian was three hours away. Larger. Better resourced. One of the top five law faculties in the country with a research endowment that his own institution’s entire department couldn’t match.“Dr. Asante,” he said carefully.“I’ll be direct,” she said. “We’ve been following the Dane investigation closely. The documentation your case produced, the methodology, the legal framework you built, has been the subjec

CHAPTER 39 POV: Mia He called at 4:30PM. She was in the middle of a tutoring session, her student midway through explaining an argument that wasn’t quite landing yet, Mia listening with the focused patience she’d discovered she possessed in quantities she hadn’t known about. Her phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at it. His name. “Give me one moment,” she said to her student. She stepped into the corridor. Answered. “Tell me,” she said. A pause. One second. Two. “They offered me the position,” he said. She pressed her back against the corridor wall. Felt something move through her, large, warm, the specific joy of receiving news you’d been hoping for on behalf of someone you loved. “Full lectureship?” she said. “Full lectureship,” he said. “The unit. The curriculum. Everything from the ground up.” A pause. “Starting September.” She pressed her hand flat against her sternum. “Ryder,” she said. “I know,” he said quietly. “Say it,” she said. “Out loud.” A pause.
