I stood frozen beside Jax’s car, the cold night pressing against my skin. My heart hammered so violently I could feel each beat climbing into my throat, thick and insistent, the pulse throbbing under my jaw until it almost hurt. The air smelled of oil, wet concrete, and something metallic that clung to the back of my tongue. A few metres away, Jax stood with a cluster of men near two black vehicles. Their voices stayed low, clipped, the kind of serious that made the hair on my arms rise. One of them checked a weapon with practised hands; the soft click of metal on metal carried clearly in the stillness. Another pointed toward the massive warehouse that loomed ahead in the dark, its outline swallowing the thin wash of distant streetlight.I knew exactly what I was supposed to do. Get back in the car, stay hidden and wait. The rational part of my mind screamed it at me, sharp and relentless, but my feet stayed planted on the gravel, the sharp edges biting through the soles of my shoes.
