Beyond the northern forest, the night was thick and slow and waiting.“Tell me something else,” she said. “Something small.”“I hate filling out administrative paperwork,” I said.“Every last bit of it. Every form. Rhen takes care of most of it because he actually enjoys it and I really don’t and we’ve had an unspoken understanding for six years.”She laughed. The real kind — the kind that’s brief and sincere and a little surprised, the way laughter happened when something was landed at just the right angle. She laughed and I felt it next to me like something the room needed and hadn't realized it did.“Your turn,” I said. She paused for a moment.“I can’t watch sad films,” she said. “At all. Even a little sad. Even movies that are mostly happy but have one sad scene. I have to get out of the room.” She paused. “Lily thinks this is hilarious because I am — in most respects — a very emotionally resilient person in real life and then a fictional dog dies and I’m out.”“Fictional dogs pa

Mara’s POVCael sat at a table in the common room with his hands clasped around a cup of tea he didn’t have the intention of drinking.I paused for a moment in the doorway before he caught sight of me — just long enough to take him in the way you take in something important before it becomes a talk, before the talk changes what you see. He was looking at the window. At the northern forest, going golden in the light of the rising sun. With the particular focus of someone who has been observing tree lines for twenty-eight years and has a very complicated relationship with them.He was the sort of person I’d have noticed anywhere. Not because of the jaw — although the jaw was what you noticed and was a little disorienting to see in the mirror — but for the way he carried himself. The unique stance of a person who has borne something burdening for so long that the bearing has become anatomical. Who had been taught to carry the load so steadily that putting it down can no longer be a strai

We sat for another hour.He told me about the running — not all, not by the close quarters, but the shape of it. The houses he’d occupied, the borders he’d broken, the distinct existence of one living in the semblance of a wolf territories where they’d nod to the walls. For most of his life he’d earned a living by using his hands — construction, logging, the sort of physical labor that is free of paperwork and that one can simply take up and abandon without providing a reason. He had been in the northern territory for the past four months among other places in the east by now. Fueled by the rumors, he had learned, through the channels that existed in the wolf world for exactly this kind of information, that something was moving in.That someone had found the thread. He’d come north to be near enough to arrive when it mattered. He had arrived when it mattered.I told him about Lily – her university course, her disastrous hair situations, the manner in which she’d looked at Damien throu

The ground was half a mile north of the lodge.I walked it with Rhen at my left and Cassius two steps behind me — not as guard, but as pack. The specific arrangement that came about naturally when something significant was coming, like the way a pack shifts when it’s moving as a single entity instead of a collection of individuals. The trees on both sides were old-growth, the wide trunked, dark-barked trees of this area had been here for centuries and they were completely unimpressed by any particular wolves and their dramas. They'd taken in quite a bit of wolf drama over the years. One more daybreak wouldn’t alter their connection to it.The clearing opened up through the woods — a natural clearing, about oval in shape, frost-silver in the predawn grey. Level. Good footing, as Rhen had said. No terrain advantage to either side. The spectators had already come.Elder Hana in her chair — it had been brought out of the lodge, into the particular logistics of the way you accommodated a

Two words. Home. Including herself in the word. Including Coldridge, the pack house, the twelve thousand acres, the forty-seven wolves who’d made her a name — in their language — including all of it in home without hesitation, without question. Something inside of me that I had been holding tight for three years — not consciously, not deliberately, just the pent up energy of a man who had decided that caring about something personally was the equivalent of being vulnerable to it and had been carrying that decision for so long it had become structural — let loose. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just — released. Like a breath. Like something that is put down after having been carried a long way. “Yes,” I said. Rhen appeared at my right shoulder with his expression bland and a jacket that he offered without comment because the morning was cold and I’d moved and the jacket was practical and Rhen was always practical. I took it. Sasha came up at Mara’s left with the a
