A few weeks later, Mr. Eric returned one of our tests. He walked between the desks, placing papers in front of students until he reached mine. Instead of dropping my paper immediately, he glanced at the score before looking at me. “Much better, Tasha.” I looked at the paper and nearly smiled when I saw my mark. “Thank you, sir.” “You’ve improved considerably.” Those few words shouldn’t have meant so much to me, but they did. I felt ridiculously pleased for the rest of the day. Before long, I had become one of the best students in his class, and Chemistry, a subject I once disliked, became the one lesson I looked forward to the most. Still, classroom interactions weren’t enough for me. Mr. Eric was friendly when necessary, but he maintained a clear distance between himself and his students.
