Jax sat alone in the dining room long after the sun had disappeared behind the hills. The farmhouse was quiet. The only sound was the ticking of the old clock on the wall and the scratching of his pen against the paper.A single sheet lay in front of him, already worn from being folded and unfolded too many times.Three crumpled drafts sat in the trash bin beside his chair.Nothing he wrote ever felt good enough. How could a few lines explain six years of absence? How could he ask a little girl to meet a man she had never known? He closed his eyes for a moment before putting the pen back on the page.He wrote his name.He told Emma that he had only recently learned she existed. He didn't blame anyone. He didn't make excuses. He didn't ask her to forgive him.Instead, he wrote the only truth he had."If you ever want to meet me, I'll be here. If you need more time, I'll wait. If you decide you never want to meet me, I'll still be grateful knowing you're safe and loved."When he reached

The fourth morning arrived without a phone call.Jax was already outside when Lily-Rose came down. She found him at the woodpile, splitting a few pieces that didn’t need splitting. The ax rose and fell in a steady rhythm. She watched for a moment from the doorway, then walked over with two mugs of coffee. She held one out. He took it without looking surprised.“Thanks.”“You’re welcome.”They stood side by side for a short while, drinking in silence. The air was cool. A thin mist still clung to the lower parts of the orchard. When Jax finished his coffee he set the mug on a flat stone and reached for the next piece of wood. Lily-Rose didn’t leave right away. She stayed long enough to finish her own drink, then carried both empty mugs back inside. It was a small thing. Ordinary. But it felt different from the careful distance they had been keeping.Later that morning the kitchen window stuck halfway open. Lily-Rose tried to push it the rest of the way and couldn’t. Jax came in from the

Lily-Rose stood in the upstairs hallway the next morning with her hand on the doorknob of the small bedroom at the end. The door had been closed for months. Behind it was a narrow bed, a plain dresser, and a window that looked out over the orchard. They had used the room for storage and the occasional overnight guest. Nothing about it belonged to anyone in particular. She opened the door and stepped inside.Dust floated in the light that came through the glass. The mattress sagged a little in the middle. An old cardboard box sat in the corner filled with winter scarves and a broken lamp. The walls were clean but bare. It was just a room. Empty. Waiting for a purpose. She stayed there a long time, looking at the space the way a person looks at a blank page. When she came downstairs, Jax was at the table fixing the hinge on a cabinet door that had been fine for years. Jimmy was reading on the couch. Lily-Rose stood in the doorway until both of them looked up.“I want to get that room re

The phone rang in the late afternoon while they were stacking the last of the firewood against the side of the house.Jax’s hands were dusty. He wiped them once on his jeans, then again, before he answered. Lily-Rose and Jimmy both stopped what they were doing and turned toward him without speaking. He put the call on speaker. The investigator’s voice came through clear and even. “I’ve heard back from the foster family. They’ve read the letter. They’ve gone through the documents carefully. After talking it over, they’ve agreed they’re willing to consider a meeting.”Jax closed his eyes for half a second.“Nothing is set in stone,” the man continued. “They want a little more time to discuss the details and make sure it feels right for Emma. But they’re open to the possibility. I’ll be in touch as soon as they give me a date or any further decision.”Jax’s voice came out rougher than he expected. “Thank you.”“I’ll keep you updated.”The call ended. For a moment the three of them stood

The investigator called again the following morning. A meeting had been set for the day after tomorrow, late morning, at a neutral place near the foster family’s town. Nothing more was promised. Just the chance to sit across from each other and begin. The news settled over the house like a change in weather—quiet, thorough, impossible to ignore. They spent the day moving through ordinary tasks with a different kind of attention. Jax checked the truck even though the engine had been running fine. Lily-Rose washed a set of clothes that didn’t particularly need washing. Jimmy wiped down the kitchen counters twice and then stood in the middle of the room as if he had forgotten what came next.By evening the real preparation began.Lily-Rose packed a small bag with clean clothes and the original letter Jax had written, even though the family had already read a copy. She folded each item carefully, as if neatness might somehow steady the hours ahead. Jax found the better map in the glove bo
