Chapter 151: Elias's Trial

Arden let the boy go and the boy ran across the road and into his father's arms and the whole of the ridge road was quiet.Dale held him."You are going home," he said. "You are going home and you are going to go to school and you are going to grow up and you are not going to be the son of a murderer."The boy was crying."Papa," he said."Go to the Alpha," Dale said. "Go to the Alpha and stand behind her and do not look back."The boy went.He came across the road and stood behind me and June put her hand on his shoulder. And then Arden said, "The trade is made. The boy for the Beta.""He is not the Beta," I said."He is the wolf who killed Owen Halloran," Arden said. "And the whole of the territory knows it and the whole of the Council knows it. And the Council has been waiting for him since the tribunal." He put his hand on his chest. "So I am going to take him to Boise and I am going to give him to the Council and the whole of it is going to be answered for."I stood in the road.

Chapter 152: The Verdict

The Council came to the territory at the next full moon and they came to the circle in the trees and they brought the whole of the Council and the whole of the Alphas of the north and the whole of the Alphas of the east. And they brought a gallows. It was in the east field in the daylight with the whole of the territory standing around it and the whole of the line and the whole of the pack and the whole of the room and the whole of the twelve and the whole of it was silent. The Alpha of the Alphas came into the circle with his staff in his hand and he stood in front of the flat stone and he put the staff down on it.“Alpha,” he said. “The Council has ruled on the Beta and the Council has ruled on the keeper and the whole of it is going to be answered for in this circle at this full moon.”I stood in the circle.“Then answer it,” I said. The Council heard the Beta first.Dale came into the circle in his shirt with his hands tied and his face gray and he stood in front of the whole of t

Chapter 153: The Sentence

The Council of Alphas did not let us go to the east. The Alpha of the Alphas brought his staff down on the stone three times and the whole of the circle went quiet and he said, “Alpha, the east is not a territory. The east is the Council’s oldest seat and the east has forty Alphas and two thousand wolves and the east has been keeping the circle closed for two hundred years. You cannot go to the east with four hundred wolves and a keeper and a line.”“Then what do you suggest?” I said.“I suggest you send an envoy,” the Alpha of the Alphas said. “And I suggest you send the one wolf the east cannot refuse.”“Who?” I said.“The Luna’s granddaughter,” he said. “Ilse of the west. The east has been hunting her for forty years and the east has never caught her and the east is going to want to look at her face.”I looked at Ilse. She was standing at the edge of the circle with her cane and her white hair and she was looking at the Alpha of the Alphas.“I will go,” she said.“No,” I said.“Alp

Chapter 154: The Escape

The Council did not hear the keeper of the east. The Alpha of the Alphas brought his staff down on the stone and said, "The Council is going to hear the keeper of the east in the morning. The Council has been sitting for two days and the whole of it is going to be decided at the next full moon and the whole of it is not going to be decided tonight."And then he looked at me."Alpha," he said. "The Council has ruled that the keeper is to be held until the next full moon. He is going to be held in the pack house under Council guard and he is going to be held until the whole of it is decided."I stood in the circle."You are going to hold him," I said."The Council is going to hold him," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "And the Council is going to hold the twelve from the room and the keeper of the room and the whole of it. The Council is going to hold the whole of the line until the next full moon."The circle was silent. And then I said, "No."The Alpha of the Alphas looked at me."Alpha

Chapter 155: The Hunt

The Council came up the mountain in a line and the whole of the line was lanterns and rifles and the whole of it was two thousand wolves. We did not stay in the circle. The circle was small and it was on a shoulder of the mountain and there was no way out of it except down and down was where the Council was coming.“Wren,” Elias said. “We cannot hold this.”“I know.”“Then we go down the other side.” He put his hand on my arm. “The old mill is at the bottom of the mountain on the north side and the mill is in the trees and the trees are thick and the Council does not know the ground.”I looked at the keeper of the east.“Is there a way down the north side?” I said.“There is a deer track,” he said. “It goes down through the rocks and it comes out at the river above the mill.”“Then we go.”We went down the north side in the dark with the whole of the line behind us and the whole of the circle behind us and the whole of the Council on the other side of the mountain coming up.It took u

Chapter 156: The Lowest Night

They took him in the east circle and they put the chain on him in front of the whole of the Council and the whole of the line and the whole of the territory. It was silver. It was the same chain they had put on him in the pack square and it was the same chain they had put on him in the round room and it burned him and he went down on his knees on the flat stone and the whole of the room was silent.“Elias,” I said.I went to him and two Council wolves took me by the arms and held me.“Wren,” he said. “Do not.”“Let go of me,” I said. The Council wolves did not let go.The Alpha of the Alphas came and stood in front of me with his staff in his hand.“Alpha,” he said. “The Council has ruled and the Council is going to hold the keeper until the next full moon. He is going to be held in the east and he is going to stand in the east circle at the full moon and the whole of it is going to be decided in one night.”I stood in the room.“You are going to hold him,” I said.“The Council is goi

Chapter 157: What I Lost

The east came into the room and the whole of the room was full of them and there were more in the tunnel and more in the mill and the whole of it was east and the whole of it was silent. The speaker of the east stood in the middle of the east circle with her staff in her hand and looked at the Alpha of the Alphas.“The Council has been told that the east is a territory,” she said. “The east is not a territory. The east is the Council’s first seat and the east has been the Council’s first seat since 1802 and the whole of it has been kept by the east for two hundred years.” She put her staff on the stone. “And the east has a bargain and the bargain is this. The line gives the east the curse and the east gives the line the land. And the whole of it has been going on since 1802 and the whole of it is going to go on for another two hundred years.”I stood in the room with Elias beside me.“The line is not going to give you anything,” I said. The speaker of the east looked at me.“The line

Chapter 158: My Family's Gift

The journal was not a book of spells. It was a book of days. It was the Luna's own and she had kept it from 1891 to 1896 and every page was a day and every day was the same day.It said: We are in the mill. Mary brings water. Margaret brings bread. The founders come at night and ask about the deed. And the next page said the same thing and the next and the next.I turned the pages and the whole of the night went past and the whole of the line sat in the room and the whole of it was silent. And then I found a page that was not the same.It was dated the eleventh of April, 1897, and it was in a different hand and it was the old Alpha's.It said: My mate is dead. She died in Walla Walla in 1896 and the fourth daughter died with her and the whole of the line is going to carry the curse and the whole of it is going to be answered for. I have made a bargain in the circle and the bargain is this. The founders will have the land and the line will have the curse and the whole of it is going to

Chapter 159: A Quiet Morning

Elias woke on the fourth day.I was not there when it happened. I was in the co-op yard with the whole of the pack and the whole of the line and a wagon of lumber and the whole of the west line to rebuild. I was standing on a pile of boards with a hammer in my hand and a list in my pocket and I was telling the Corrigan boys where to put the new loading dock. And then June came running across the yard.“Wren,” she said. “He is awake.”I dropped the hammer.I went up the ridge at a run and into Maeve's cottage and into the back room and he was sitting up in the bed with a blanket around his shoulders and his hair in his eyes and his face still gray and the whole of him was looking at the door.“Wren,” he said.I sat down on the bed and put my arms around him.“You are awake,” I said.“I am awake.” He put his hand on my back. “How long?”“Four days.”“Four days.” He pulled back and looked at me. “The east.”“The east has withdrawn,” I said. “The whole of the Council has ruled and the who

The Alpha of the Alphas came into the territory at noon and the whole of the square was full. There were four hundred wolves of the Circle Pack and the whole of the line and the whole of the twelve from the room and the eleven the keeper had hidden and the whole of the ones the east had taken. There were the eleven Alphas of the north and the keeper of the east and the keeper of the room and the whole of the Council of Alphas behind him.And there was a table in the middle of the square with a paper on it and a seal and a pen.The Alpha of the Alphas stood at the table and put his staff down on it."Alpha," he said. "The Council of Alphas has ruled on the whole of it and the whole of it is going to be named today." He picked up the paper. "The Council names this territory the Circle Pack and the land of the Circle Pack is the land of the Palouse and the mill and the east field and the circle in the trees and the whole of the west line and the whole of the north line. And the Alpha of
