In the original ‘Lorna Doone’ novel by R.D. Blackmore, John Ridd triumphs over the villainous Carver Doone in order to marry Lorna once she has recovered from her gunshot wound. They return to Exmoor to bring peace after long periods of family strife. Set in a very different world, the web novel ‘The Abandoned Wife’ offers a more modern take on marriage as a battleground. At the heart of ‘The Abandoned Wife’ is a woman whose marriage begins as a fight for dignity against a ruthless CEO husband and his powerful and detestable family.

The ending of ‘Lorna Doone’ is largely triumphant but contains a degree of tragedy. After long hardship caused by the Doone family, John Ridd finally gets his day in which he fights Carver Doone in a duel. He wins and Carver Doone is killed in a bog. Lorna, who was brought up by the Doone family, discovers that she is a member of the nobility and, unlike many people, chooses to stay with her true love, John Ridd, instead of joining her true family. He is from a lower social class than herself.

Balancing the individual victories of John and Lorna with the wider task of bringing justice to the Doone criminals and putting an end to their terror, the novel creates a satisfying and hopeful conclusion to the two main characters. It is a genuine test of the pair’s love and ultimate resilience to face the external pressures that are attempted to drive them apart and in the end they prove stronger than the attempts to split them.

The ending to ‘Lorna Doone’ is dramatic as John Ridd finally defeats Carver Doone who murdered his father in a dramatic location as Carver sinks into the bog bringing to an end the Doone tyranny. After being kidnapped by the Doones as a child Lorna finds out she is of noble birth and inherits a title and estate but chooses to marry John instead of elevating herself above him due to his love and loyalty towards her. The ending is bittersweet but ultimately very satisfying as justice has been carried out and John and Lorna can be together at last.

For me, the ending of ‘Lorna Doone’ is very satisfying in that it is a redemption of John Ridd, the underdog. Simple John Ridd, a farmer, is transformed into a hero in his bid to get rid of Carver Doone, the man responsible for the death of John’s brothers and father. His victory in the end, with Carver Doone’s death in the bog being the most poetic, is all the more satisfying as Lorna, in discovering her ancestors were nobles, chooses to marry simple John Ridd over Carver.

The final resolution of the novel brings to a close the Doone Valley’s long reign of terror with the downfall of the Doone family. For John, however, his victory is not just a personal success but that of the whole community. Yet the novel does not end happily for the main protagonists of the love story. There is a feeling of loss and also of sacrifice. Although in the end it is to be John and Lorna’s love that conquers all, their triumph is achieved through the scars of the past.

The two attempts to get the wedding exchanged for some insight into the developing relationship of Lorna and Clay would be worth the time of the reader. The public ceremony of the first attempt at their wedding was abruptly ended by a shooting. Their true union, after Lorna’s recovery from that incident, is a private and very happy occasion. Again, the simple feelings that they express to each other, and the great joy that they feel to be surrounded by their friends and other witnesses to their marriage, is in stark contrast to the public and formal description of their wedding. The quiet commitment of these two people to each other in the private world of their home is of so much greater value than any titles or estates that Lorna has inherited. The ending is very private.

How does Marnie end in the novel?

5 Antworten2025-11-26
When I read Marnie the first time, Marnie’s fate was very impactful on me. But upon re-reading the novel as an adult, I see how Robinson used Marnie’s departure to delve further into the novel of Anna’s development. When Anna finds Marnie’s diary and can make connections, for me, that wasn’t just a nice ending to the novel. That was the moment when Anna confronted some of her repressed emotions. The ending of the novel is very ambiguous, and it lingers with the reader, just as it lingers with Anna. But, even though there are more questions than answers for the reader, that is enough.

How does the poldark novel series end for the main characters?

So many of the minor characters receive closure in this final episode. Prudie and Jud get the moment they deserve, as do Jinny and poor Jim Carter’s family. It is a wonderful testament to Graham Harding’s writing that he remembered them all. The ending of the episode serves to paint a portrait of the entire community, not just the Poldark family. Nampara, their home, is a living, breathing ecosystem and it and they have all been affected in so many ways by the good and bad fortunes of the Poldarks. Seeing what happens to the various servants, the miners and their families and the neighbors all round serves to reinforce the point that the story of Ross and Demelza was never just about them. Their struggles and successes had a ripple effect on the community around them and it’s heartening to see how they are all now thriving as a result.

How does The Cows novel end?

I was left feeling equally heartbroken and happy at the end of The Cows. Tara’s redemption of owning the scandal of her life rather than trying to hide it from her family and friends was amazing. Cam’s story was another favorite of mine – so quietly and honestly Finland of the struggles to be a mother and to pursue your ambitions. But Stella’s journey was the hardest to read of all and yet there is a glimmer of hope at the end that felt justified and not a cheap ending. The ending of the book is so real life and really shows the messy middle ground of closure and how small victories can be huge. I dogs ear’d the last page as it was so perfect.

How does Broken novel end?

I've been left in a really unusual reflective space for days after finishing 'Broken'. It's been left open in a really meaningful way - ambiguous but purposeful. After a long journey of running from her past, the protagonist finally comes to a stop but doesn't find instant redemption. A really poignant moment came when she returned to the site of a trauma from her past, and instead of falling apart, she just sat with it. The rest of the story didn't get tied up with a bow, and the secondary characters didn't get the closure that they maybe would have. I love endings that trust the reader to sit with the negative emotions and find their own way through them.

How does Madame Bovary end?

The mediocre are victorious in the end. Homais is awarded a public honor while the blind beggar who in his primal simplicity embodied unmediated pain is sent off to a nursing home and packed off out of sight. As for the deep and vital, though somewhat undependable individuals Emma and Charles Bovary – the woman who felt passion, the man who felt only the purest love – are dead. As for the bourgeois who keep so peaceably in their houses, safe from danger and alike from joy and sorrow, one of them is still going strong. Homais with his medal. The town of Yonville is unchanged. The townspeople are even more self-satisfied than before. It is Flaubert’s verdict on the society he himself lived in. Vice in the shape of hypocrisy will be rewarded while depth and originality are punished. It is not a moral ending. It is in fact anti-moral.

What happens to 'Black Beauty' at the end of the novel?

I’m getting all teary-eyed thinking about the end of Black Beauty. After everything that poor horse went through – his fall that ruined his knees, his rough handling by drunken Reuben Smith while he was a London cab horse – he just gets to be at peace at last. Joe is all grown up and kind, and he takes Black Beauty to a farm where he is well cared for by several sweet sisters who groom him gently and lovingly. He lives in a lovely orchard, and the scene where they take his halter off and he can go where he likes? Makes me cry every time. It’s just his simple wish to be safe and to be free been fulfilled, and you feel every second of his torture and tribulation and then his relief and happiness at being at last safe and free. It’s one of the few classic children’s books that ends on a note that doesn’t feel sticky or false, because it’s so well-deserved. You finish the book feeling angry and indignant on behalf of all animals.

What happens at the end of 'Gone with the Wind'?

The ending of the novel supplants the romantic ending the film provided. Rhett is not a handsome financier waiting for Scarlett to realize her love for him. Instead he is a hurt and bitter man who gave up on her. Meanwhile, Scarlett’s obsessive love for Ashley is exposed for what it is: the delusional fantasy of a little girl. Her recognition of her love for Rhett is also revealed, and it is quickly followed by her realization that she destroyed her chances with him. The novel returns to Tara, the house where Scarlett began her plotting and scheming. But Tara is not the idyllic past it once was. Instead it is a house where Scarlett can continue to plot and scheme. And the driving force behind all her actions is still there. But now it is directed towards a goal she can never attain.

How does 'My Friends' novel end?

10 Antworten2025-06-24
What the book achieves above all is to validate the private ending of Leo’s story over the public one. The public ending of the story of the man who founded a major company and watched it fail is one that will be trotted out as a cautionary tale for web entrepreneurs in tech blogs for years to come. The private ending on the riverbank with his friends of many years was peaceful and validated the quiet recovery he had made from the scandals of his life. In our culture we are addicted to the story of the scandal, of the failure. This novel insists that the real story of Leo’s latter years, of quiet recovery from personal scandals and of sustaining a true friendship over decades, is of far greater significance to us than the publicly recognized story of his downfall as the founder of a high-profile company. The book is a reclaiming of his story from the prying eyes of the public.

How does the cold mountain novel end?

It's a "downer" of a story, well and magnificently written to be sure, but a "downer" nonetheless. And it demands a very specific emotional readiness to read. If you're in the mood for something to escape in, this is NOT the book for you. But if you're ready to have your heart torn out in the name of an exceptionally well-written story of human endurance and the relationships we have with others, then this is an ideal read for you. Just make sure you have something exceedingly light and fluffy in your reading queue for afterwards, because you're going to need it.

What is the ending of the novel Re Zero?

10 Antworten2026-04-03
I was terrified that they would kill off major characters in the finale for dramatic effect. After everything the characters had been through, they deserved so much more. It would have been so manipulative of them to take a major character’s life just when everything was going to be okay. Instead, the relief of seeing everyone alive and happy and looking forward to tomorrow is just the best. It was 100% earned.
