The way that Patrick Rothfuss is describing his own struggles with anxiety and his great fear that he will not meet the expectations that he has for the third Kingkiller Chronicle book is making the time until that book appears extremely slowly. While waiting I have started to read completed series. The latest in a series of books about a man’s journey through life is ‘The Price of Peace: Book 3 In The No More Regrets Series’. It is the final book in a trilogy by this author and is a highly satisfying read, providing a smooth and well-paced conclusion to the very costly journey that this deeply flawed protagonist has gone on from a life of revenge to governance.

I think one has to remember that Patrick Rothfuss is a very meticulous writer. He writes his books like clockwork, with great care for the detail of the story, and lots of hidden clues in the text itself. He’s spoken in interviews about how the story of The Doors of Stone has evolved in ways he didn’t expect, and how he’s been revising the book. And, in the meantime, he’s also been involved in hisfantastic livestreams, lots of charity work, and… fatherhood.

Fans should remember that authors are not required to write anything. Creative blocks, personal struggles or even a lack of interest in a project can cause delays. Rothfuss isn’t George R.R. Martin, but he’s getting similar criticism from the internet. And yes, I’m sure he’s working on The Doors of Stone, just not as fast as we’d like.

It’s taking so long but I get it. Rothfuss writes in a very lyrical and dense manner. He’s slowly revealed foreshadowing in each chapter, and I think he’d let the whole series down if he rushed the ending of Kvothe’s story. He’s re-written huge sections of The Doors of Stone, and maybe it won’t work. He’s also got Worldbuilders and TV adaptations of the books to concentrate on (although that seems to have stalled). When it’s ready is when ‘The Doors of Stone’ will appear.

This is going to sound pompous, but I’ve been a fan of Patrick Rothfuss’ ‘Kingkiller Chronicle’ series for years, and I’ve been waiting what feels like an eternity for the third book, ‘The Doors of Stone’. I’d heard that Patrick is a perfectionist, taking a long time to write each book due to the intricate storyline and detailed description of the world he’s created. It has also been revealed recently that he suffers from some form of mental health problem.

Expectations also play a significant role as the high quality of the first two books, The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear, has awoken extremely high hopes in fans and critics alike. In order to satisfy these expectations Rothfuss would have to write a masterpiece, which is a task for the best writers and which can even paralyze them. Besides this, the author is also very active in other charity projects like Worldbuilders.

He has written himself into a storytelling corner with the book as it is currently structured, and it seems to imply a rather tragic ending. The loose ends will require a rather thoughtful and plausible way to tie them up, and while it is frustrating to wait for a book, I believe great art cannot be rushed.

As we continue to await the third book in the Kingkiller Chronicle series, we can spend hours speculating on why the delay has occurred. Will Rothfuss lose interest in writing The Doors of Stone? Will he get stuck on the ending? While I believe the latter to be highly probable given the promise of a tragic conclusion to The Kingkiller Chronicle in The Doors of Stone, there are many other external factors that the author is dealing with as well. For one, he’s dealing with the recent loss of his father. While that tragedy may affect Rothfuss in many ways, including his writing, it’s also well known that creative work is not linear. And the pressure from fans is sure to test the author’s resolve to complete the series to the best of his ability when he finally does get around to it. I’m sure he’ll get it right when he does.

I can think of a few reasons for the delay, including the author’s perfectionism and shifting priorities for his early drafts of The Doors of Stone. While he may get a kick out of pretending to be harassing his fans into forcing him to finish the book, I think the reality is writing is hard and he’s under a lot of scrutiny to get it right. Plus, the author has talked about his struggles with depression and anxiety and how those impact his life – they don’t care about any deadlines he sets for himself.

This is not a delay in the traditional sense. It would be a problem of such magnitude to the story the author is trying to tell and the promises he made to the reader in the frame narrative that it would be a years long rewrite of material already written in order to set up a satisfactory conclusion for the story of Kvothe the Great. The only way that the two halves of Kvothe’s life could be adequately bridged in a single book would be to rewrite so much of what has already been written in order to set up that final book in a completely different way than was previously imagined. That would be a truly monumental task.

Trying to compare Rothfuss to Sanderson is kind of pointless because they’re just working with such different brains. Sanderson is an architect; Rothfuss is a gardener who planted a magical beanstalk and now he can’t see the top of it. Architect’s tend to produce similar work in a consistent fashion. Gardener’s can produce the most incredible and unique vines, but they rarely fruit, and even when they do, it’s never sure if they’ll get more than one. We got two incredible fruits from Rothfuss. Maybe that’s all we get.

The ending could be tragic and bleak. Kvothe could fail to achieve his goals and die. The world could come to an end. It would be a shame to end such a beautifully imagined and musical world, but perhaps that is too much for the author to bear. The fanbase has somehow managed to create this issue amongst themselves. The pedestal they have placed Mr. Abercrombie on is far too high. So now every minor character from the series must secretly be a Chandrian or an Amyr. Every line from Mr. Abercrombie must be a hidden cipher waiting to be deciphered by the reader. The amount of pressure that Mr. Abercrombie must feel to make every single detail from books 1 & 2 pay off in meaningful ways in book 3 is far too great for any one writer to handle. Not only is he trying to write an ending to a series, he is also supposed to be able to provide the unified field theory of his universe.

Is it the case that he has written the book and it is terrible? Even after all this time, “terrible” or even “fine” would be very disappointing. So maybe he just thinks it won’t be any good and would rather be the guy who never completed the trilogy than the guy who completes it badly. Protecting the good names of the first two books might be his main concern.

It’s the curse of the perfectionist. All creative people suffer from it. The first two books were so beautifully crafted – every sentence weighed up, every reference to myth and legend included. But that sort of attention to detail can’t be maintained on a deadline. I imagine he has a draft or even several of them but none of them are good enough for him. He keeps tinkering and reworking and eventually the whole thing comes crashing down. Meanwhile, fans of his work are traveling around the world and laying out a whole storyline based on a blog post he wrote over a decade ago. It’s very sad.

The depth of our work seems to come at the cost of a brutal, and largely unpredictable, work schedule.
