The Don Played a Game With the Wrong Woman - Alle romane & geschichte

Tragic Love
Lara Dimson
Fifteen years ago, Vincenzo Marchetti pushed me down a stairwell at Saint Catherine's Academy and shattered my skull. I spent four months in the hospital with a fractured head, broken ribs, and bleeding in my brain. The doctors said I would have chronic migraines for the rest of my life and that the scar would never fade.  Vincenzo Marchetti never faced a single consequence because his family owned the school, the hospital, and the police. Two years ago, his mother approached my father at a community event and said her son wanted to meet me. I should have run. But in our world, refusing a Marchetti wasn't really an option for a family like mine. When Vincenzo sat across from me at that first dinner, I watched his face carefully for any sign of recognition. But there was nothing—just polite interest and charm. Maybe he had forgotten or maybe I had been so insignificant that breaking my body was just another Tuesday for him. So I said yes when he proposed. I smiled at our wedding and I played the role of the perfect mafia wife. For one year, I lived in his penthouse cage. He cooked me breakfast, remembered my coffee order, and whispered that he loved me every night before I slept. Then I found the note on his phone, created ten days before we ever met. Six words that destroyed everything. Isabella Russo, the game has begun. Our entire marriage was a revenge and I was the pawn he married to humiliate his rival family.  But Vincenzo Marchetti made one critical mistake —he thought I would stay broken. I planted bugs in his office, stole his financial records and made an alliance with his most dangerous enemy—the boy I tried to save all those years ago, who's now a Don with his own empire. In the mafia, they say you don't forgive and you don't forget. Vincenzo taught me that lesson when he shattered my skull. Now I'm about to teach him what happens when the broken girl learns to fight back.

The Day After Our Wedding, My Wife Claimed She Didn’t Know Me - Alle romane & geschichte
Reborn
Feel-Good Story

Superhero
The day after our wedding, my wife claimed she didn’t know me. I’d spent years working myself to the bone and saving every penny before I could finally marry the woman I loved. Between the house, the car, and everything I’d paid toward the wedding, I’d spent three million dollars. But the very next day, my wife stared at me in terror and insisted she was single. Worse, the county clerk’s office had no record of us ever getting married. The house and car were both in her name. Half a lifetime of savings had vanished overnight. Furious, I tracked down her friends, certain they could prove the truth. Instead, every one of them claimed they’d never seen me before. I stormed into the county clerk’s office demanding answers. The staff thought I was delusional and called the police. “You’ve gone crazy from wanting a woman that badly, haven’t you? You probably got married in a dream. What bride refuses to recognize her husband the day after the wedding?” After trying to mediate, even the police decided there was something wrong with me. Desperate to recover my house and car, I fought to take back what was mine. Instead, my wife accused me of running a marriage scam and trying to steal her property. Whenever I showed up, the building’s security guards beat me and threw me out. My wife posted videos of my breakdowns online, and the entire internet mocked me. Everyone believed I was insane. In the end, exhausted and tormented beyond endurance, I wandered into traffic and was struck dead. But when I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day we were supposed to get our marriage certificate.

Sunny Embrace
My camera could show what a person would look like three days in the future. When I photographed my parents, the picture showed them seated together at the wedding, hands clasped and pride shining on their faces. When I photographed my twin brother, he was bending down with a smile, arranging the train of the gown. When I photographed my best friend, Jessica, she wore a bridesmaid dress and recorded the ceremony through tear-filled eyes. Everyone looked radiant. The future seemed perfect. Thrilled by what I saw, I turned the camera toward my fiance, Mason Carter. The moment I pressed the shutter, everything inside me went still. I stopped breathing. In the photograph, three days from now, he was sliding a ring onto a woman's hand. It was not mine. The scar between her thumb and forefinger could belong to only one person. My adopted sister, Lily Reynolds. She was the bride at the wedding three days away. And everyone I loved had spent an entire year making a fool of me.

Sixteen Strokes
On the day of my wedding, my groomsman, Steve Hayes, asks my bride, Vera Johnson, three questions. Both she and her bridesmaids will get money and a gold necklace each if she answers the questions correctly. I assume that she's determined to win, but surprisingly, she gets the first question wrong. "What's Colin's shoe size?" "Size 9," Vera replies without hesitation. "What's Colin's favorite color?" "Blue." Everyone exchanges glances with each other, feeling a little awkward. Steve asks Vera the easiest question. "When did Colin graduate from university?" Everyone believes that Vera won't get this question wrong. After all, we are university classmates. "2013," Vera answers. "I gave him a protective charm from Mt. Cloudpeak as his graduation gift. There's no way that I'll forget that." Panic grips my heart at that moment. I glance at my best friend, Steve, who's dressed in a blue groomsman suit. There's a protective charm hanging on the necklace around his neck. Steve's eyes flash before he whispers, "Colin graduated in 2012. The one who was held back was me." I'm struck by a realization. The last hint of hesitation in my heart disappears. The corners of my lips curl up into a smile as I look down to send my family a message. "Mom, Dad, can you drive the car over? I'm not getting married anymore."

Mary Johnson
To marry Lorenzo Vincenzo, I gave up my photography career. A dream I had held for ten years. But on our fourth anniversary, I asked my sister Greer to draft the divorce papers. She kept asking, over and over. "Why would you leave Lorenzo? He's the top surgeon at St. Vincent's. Rich, gorgeous. Half the city is dying for a shot at him." I swallowed the bitterness clawing up my throat. "Because of a gift." Greer followed my gaze to the music box on the table. The card was in Elara's handwriting. Lorenzo's junior from med school. [Thank you for flying out to do my aunt's surgery, senior. I know it was a long trip. You worked so hard. The little dancers on this music box remind me of us at graduation prom. Hope you like it, Lorenzo.] That day, my father was in a car accident. I rushed him to St. Vincent's. Only Lorenzo could do the surgery. I searched every floor of that hospital, every corridor. Nowhere. I told myself he must be on a business trip. But no. He had left his post for Elara. The same man who once swore he would never abandon the OR for personal matters. Finally, my father died on the table. Greer pulled me into her arms. "The Vincenzo family owns this city. Their reach is everywhere. Where could you possibly go that he would not find you?" I glanced at the flight confirmation on my phone. "Three days. I am flying to Paris, to a photography studio there. And I will make sure he never, ever finds me."

My family is cursed. Every descendant is fated to die before turning twenty-seven. But the curse has a cure. If the person I truly love climbs Mount Elme and picks a stalk of the Everroot for me, drinking it will heal me completely. Mount Elme only reveals itself once a year. Keith Ryder had gone up five times to pick it for me. And I had waited five years for him to succeed. But every time I drank what he brought back, I collapsed almost instantly, foaming at the mouth and convulsing as I fell from my wheelchair. Each time, his eyes would go red as he looked down at me. "I'm sorry, Tori. I picked the wrong one again. But I promise, next time, I'll bring you the real Everroot." I believed him. This year, I turned twenty-seven. I drank the medicine with my whole heart set on it, and when I collapsed again, Mindy Bloom pointed at me and laughed. "Look at her twitching like that. It's like she's having a seizure! If it weren't for the weed Keith grabbed off the ground, I'd never have gotten to see a show this good." I stared at Keith, stunned. "What did she just say? A weed?" He looked back at me like I was the one in the wrong. "Mindy wanted to see it happen. What's the big deal?" My eyes went wide. My heart felt like it had been stabbed with a needle. "But you know I'm already," I started, only for him to cut me off. "Twenty-seven," he said, brow furrowing with irritation. "Isn't that exactly why you want me to marry you sooner? "Come on, Tori. Mindy's got depression. If I marry you right now, she'll feel insecure. "But I promise, once she's better, I'll bring you every miracle cure there is. Deal?" I looked quietly at his face while the wetness at the corners of my eyes dried on its own. He had no idea. I wasn't going to make it that long.

Maren Reeves, my best friend, suddenly told me she'd gotten back together with her ex. I tore into her for going back to a man who'd already hurt her, but she only gave me a bitter smile. "Maybe some people are just destined to keep getting tangled up with each other. Renee, I don't need your validation. I just don't want you to be mad at me." At the time, I didn't understand what Maren really meant. I thought she was only worried I'd get worked up over that jerk again. Seeing the conflict on her face, I couldn't bring myself to keep scolding her. I simply hugged her and told her not to settle for anything that made her unhappy. Then, a year later, I went to the hospital because of severe menstrual cramps and unexpectedly saw her leaving the maternity ward. Confused, I was about to approach her when a man hurried over, carefully helping her along and fussing over her every need. In an instant, I instinctively ducked behind the corner, my entire body trembling uncontrollably. Because that man was none other than Isaiah Cole, my husband of three years.

It’s been five years since my mother married into the Sterling crime family, and my relationship with my stepbrother, Louis, is still ice-cold. He’s arrogant, aloof, and wouldn’t give me the time of day. I know better than to even try. Until I saw it: a birthmark on Louis’s body, identical to the one on my online boyfriend, Rowan. I thought about the messages Rowan had sent me every night for the past two years, the ones that made my face flush and my heart race: Baby, I can only fall asleep thinking of you. I need to see you. I’ll show you how much I want you. I’m going crazy thinking about you… I just couldn’t square the man in those messages with the cold-as-ice Louis. To make matters worse, I had just lied to Rowan, telling him I’d failed to get into Harvard and wasn't good enough for him, before breaking up with him. If he finds out it was me who dumped him, I’m pretty sure he’ll tear me to pieces. I was already packing my bags, ready to bolt. But then Louis appeared, blocking my path. He leaned in, his low laugh a menacing rumble in my ear. "Think you can play me and just walk away? Who gave you the balls?"

I finally hit the jackpot and won ten million dollars. But in my excitement, I slipped on a stray beer bottle and freakin' died! When I opened my eyes again, I had reincarnated as the useless heir of a washed-up, ruined noble family. Suddenly, a voice chimed in my head. [Cold-Hearted Empress Conquest System initiated! Host, please present flowers to the Empress!] I absolutely lost my mind. "Screw off! I hadn't even cashed out my ten million dollars, and you want me to play some stupid dating sim? This is a scam. I’m out!" With no other choice, the system reluctantly compromised. [If you can make the empress fall madly in love with you, your reward will be one hundred million dollars and a ticket back home!] Hey, who actually turns down that kind of cash? Game on! I will be the ultimate simp if that’s what it takes. Armed with world-class strategies and modern tech, I launched a national development plan. Building infrastructure and saving the kingdom? Easy money. Soon enough, the empress’s look of pure disgust turned into absolute obsession. She was practically begging me to rule the empire right alongside her. Just as the system announced my victory and prepared to send me home, I realized only kids choose between options. The cash, the empress... I’m keeping both! Smirking, I used my maxed-out system points to rewrite the source code and force open a permanent portal between our worlds. "Hey, are you the manufacturer? I need ten excavators delivered straight to the portal coordinates. My wife needs to expand her palace!"

On my final assignment of the year, I'm sent to cover dating rumors about the woman I've been secretly married to for five years. A headline claiming that Anna Green, Asteridge's famously aloof heiress, may have found true love quickly went viral. "The woman no one could win over finally made it official. I always thought she'd never marry." "Who could possibly have won her over?" Everyone gushes over her supposed new romance, unaware that she and I have been married for five years. Then Anna calls a press conference to clear up the rumors herself. Beneath the bright lights, she commands as much admiration as ever. When they call on me, I force myself to lift the microphone. My voice shakes. "Ms. Green, is there any truth to the recent rumors?" Anna looks at me for several seconds, then turns away. She locks fingers with Tyler Cooper and kisses him with every camera in the room trained on them. "Of course there is." The world around me goes silent.

After the SAT, Mom and Dad give Henry Simpson, my brother, a Rolex. I, on the other hand, receive nothing but the missing admission ticket. Dad says, "I found your admission ticket under the couch last night, Gavin. It's too bad you couldn't take the SAT with Henry this year, but don't beat yourself up because of this. You should just treat this admission ticket as a lesson to be more careful when you retake the SAT next year." The admission ticket before me carries a subtle scent, a smell that belongs exclusively to Mom and Dad's closet. Dad continues, "You have nothing to worry about, Gavin. I'll give you a watch too once you retake the SAT next year and get accepted into a good university." I laugh under my breath in disbelief. They are telling me to retake the SAT, not knowing that I have already received guaranteed admission to Crestvale University. I only registered for the SAT this time to accompany Henry and go through the motions so that he wouldn't feel insecure or mess up his test scores. If Mom and Dad are willing to hide my admission ticket for Henry's sake, then I no longer care about the so-called family bond between us.

I've spent eight years in a secret relationship with my best friend's brother. In public, Gerald Scott treats me like nothing more than his capable secretary. Behind closed doors, he holds me in his arms every night, whispering that he'll love me forever. One day, I accidentally discover that he's bought one of those 'one-per-lifetime' engagement rings. Certain he's about to propose to me, I follow him to the beautifully decorated venue, my heart bursting with excitement. Instead, I watch him drop to one knee before a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to me. Tears fill his eyes as he slips the ring onto her finger. "You're the only woman I'll ever marry." After the woman says yes, Gerald's friends gather around to congratulate him. One of them laughs. "The real thing's finally back. So when are you getting rid of the stand-in you've been keeping at home?" Gerald takes a slow drag on his cigarette before exhaling a cloud of smoke. "That woman's completely devoted to me," he says quietly. "She'll never leave me. There's no rush." I clamp a hand over my mouth to stop myself from crying. Then I turn around and send my mother a message that reads, "Mom, I've made up my mind. I'll go through with the arranged marriage." As fate would have it, the day Gerald is getting married is the very day Alvin Hart and I are due to make our marriage official. And when Gerald sees the wedding announcement I post, the color drains from his face.

The night before our wedding, the planner suggested using AI to generate a personalized set of vows. He said that all it needed was ten years' worth of chat history between Lawrence Croft and me, and it would write vows that understood us better than anyone. I had been looking forward to it. Because over those ten years, I had written more than three thousand unsent notes. Notes about the cities I wanted to visit with him, the flowers I dreamed of growing, and the words I hoped to say on our wedding day. But when the screen lit up, the first line the AI read was, "Lawrence, thank you for always making me the most important person in your life." The signature at the bottom was Sienna Vane. Lawrence's childhood friend. The woman who, at every gathering over the years, had always been seated on his right. The room fell silent. With reddened eyes, Sienna hurried to explain, "I was just worried your wedding would feel too quiet, so I added a little of my chat history with Lawrence." Lawrence frowned and looked at me. "AI doesn't understand things like this. Don't take a machine so seriously." I did not say a word. Then the planner quietly asked him, "Mr. Croft… should I restore Ms. Lind's notes? You said they were too personal for the wedding, so I deleted them." A smile slowly spread across my face. So the love I had hidden for ten years had not even been worthy of being read aloud in his eyes. I slipped off my engagement ring and canceled the wedding livestream. I no longer wanted a love story trained on someone else.

Peachy Peach
Everyone knew that whenever a daughter of the Holloway shipping dynasty got married, her family would launch a magnificent fleet of a hundred flower-decked ships to escort her to her wedding. The main ship carrying the bride was always decorated by her parents themselves. The more lavish the flowers, jewels, and ornaments, the more cherished the daughter was considered—and the more respect she'd receive from her husband's family. My bridal ship had been waiting for me for eight years. But over the course of eighteen wedding dates, every ceremony was ruined. Either my foster sister, Chloe Holloway, would "accidentally" smash a hole through the hull and leave it taking on water, or the sails would mysteriously snap just as the procession was about to depart. Before long, everyone believed I was nothing but a curse. After eighteen failed wedding dates, I decided to spend the night guarding the bridal ship myself. Instead, someone knocked me unconscious and threw me into the river. By the time I was pulled from the water and rushed to the wedding drenched from head to toe, the lead ship had already set sail. Chloe stood proudly at the bow while my parents raised the sails with their own hands, carrying her across the river to my fiance, Julian Sterling. The moment they saw me, my childhood friend, Mason Rowe, and my best friend, Natalie Hayes, blocked the entrance, refusing to let me through. Neither of them looked the least bit guilty. "We all planned the bride swap together," they admitted openly. "Make as much of a scene as you want. It won't change anything. "Chloe's parents died saving us. We owe it to her to fulfill her dream of getting married. Just be the bigger person." My brother, Ethan Holloway, looked at me with icy indifference. "Mom and Dad said that if you don't cause trouble today, we'll finally tell everyone you're not cursed. But if you insist on making a scene, don't expect to remain a member of this family. "And Julian made himself perfectly clear. If you ruin today's wedding, someone else will permanently be Mrs. Sterling." I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms, refusing to let them see me cry. What Julian didn't know was that someone else had been waiting for me all along. He was never my only choice. And as for this family, I didn't want them anymore.

On the day the earthquake hits, my father, Collin Rimes, carries my injured little sister, Poppy Rimes, on his back, trekking about four miles through the mountains before finally reaching the emergency relief camp. His spine is bent low as he paces back and forth outside the command center in anxious hesitation before finally plastering a pleading, subservient smile on his face. "I'm looking for Captain Rubin. I'm his father-in-law. My little girl is injured. Could you please find a place for her?" The guard in camouflage frowns and heads inside to report. A moment later, Scotty Rubin's cold voice drifts out of the tent. "There are injured people everywhere waiting for help, from three-year-olds to 80-year-olds. Every one of them is just as desperate. But we follow protocol here. No special treatment." The smile on Dad's face freezes. Lost and helpless, he glances down at Poppy, who's drenched in cold sweat from the agonizing pain. His Adam's apple bobs, and he swallows the words he wants to say. Nodding emphatically, he hoists Poppy onto his back and shuffles to the side. "Yes, yes, of course. We should follow the rules. That's only right. Scotty is right." Seeing this, a sharp, suffocating pain stabs through my heart. But just as I'm about to speak up, I manage to get a peek at Scotty's phone lighting up on the desk. The latest message is to the woman he's never truly gotten over. "Don't worry, Mae. I've already arranged a private shelter for you. You and your family can all go there. There'll be hot meals, hot water, and dedicated doctors on standby." In that instant, I realize I'm the world's biggest joke. Well, since that's the case, I'll just set Scotty free.

Seven months pregnant, and I accidentally overheard a conversation between my Alpha mate Kane Frost and the pack Beta Ethan Roberts. "This one's going to Vivian too?" Ethan's voice was thick with fury. "You're really giving away Elena's pup to repay a life debt?" Kane was silent for a long moment. "Vivian saved me." "Seven years ago, that silver dagger was meant for my heart." "She took that blade for me. The residual silver poison destroyed her womb. She can never have a pup of her own." "Her only wish is to keep Elena's pup by her side." Ethan slammed his fist against the wall. "But she's already gotten two pups!" "This is the last one." Kane's voice was hoarse, but there was no hesitation. "Vivian promised me. After she gets this pup, she'll leave Silvermoon territory." "When this is over, I'll have another pup with Elena." "I'll spend the rest of my life loving her. Making it up to her. To the pups we'll have together." My stomach churned. I nearly threw up right there. Three years. I'd been pregnant twice before. And every time, after the surgery, Kane held me and told me the pup had stopped breathing before it could be born. I'd cried myself raw over those two little souls who never got to see the light. I'd clutched their tiny clothes every night, unable to let go. Only now did I understand. They never died. They were alive. Kane had stolen them from me, given them to someone else. Tears spilled down my cheeks, hot and endless. I gently touched my swollen belly. "This time, little one. Mommy's taking you away."

The night I lost the promotion I had worked for years to earn, I sent my boyfriend, Arthur, a text message. [I'm a little tired today, but the hot dog at the corner actually tastes pretty good.] My screen stayed dark. Half an hour later, I couldn't stop myself from typing again: [Are you busy? I just want to hear your voice.] A reply finally lit up my screen: [Are you trying to guilt me into sending you money?] I stared at the text, frozen. When Arthur had first started his company, his mother had drained every account and disappeared with all the funds, leaving him with billions in debt overnight. After that, he hated one thing above all else. Women who loved him for his money. For seven years, I had done everything I could to prove I wasn't one of them. We went Dutch on meals, I returned his gifts, and the results of every corporate project I handled were laid out in the open for anyone to scrutinize. And now, as I mindlessly scrolled through social media, I saw a selfie posted by Jessica, the intern who had just stolen my promotion. She was wearing a plunging V-neck gown, pinned with a pigeon-blood ruby brooch. The caption read: [Thank you to Mr. Whitmore for the congratulations. I look forward to learning from you in the future.] That brooch was a top-tier custom piece. I'd seen it in a catalog from an auction house. Tears blurred my screen into a messy haze. I suddenly understood. The innocence I'd spent seven years proving was worth less to him than the hot dog I'd just choked down. Since that was the case, I dialed a number I hadn't called in a very long time. "Papa, I want to come home. I'm ready to be the heiress."

My parents received their ‘Educators of the Year’ award on the day my twin sister and I were born. The reporters asked, "How will you educate your children in the future?" My father looked at the babies in the incubator. "Twins are perfect for a comparison experiment." My mother nodded weakly. "One of them will be brought up as an elite, while the other will grow up naturally. This is the only way to prove if education can change someone's life." That was how my family began its two grooming projects. The elite twin was given early education from the age of one month old, and her schedule was filled with enriching activities until she was 25. The regular twin was guaranteed only her most basic survival needs. The experiment would be a success as long as she did not die of starvation, freeze to death, or succumb to any illnesses. All our relatives praised my parents for their dedication and enthusiasm, and their colleagues told them, "These are what real educators are like." When it came time to announce their results on the big screen during a press conference, 26 years later… Mom, Dad, why are you so afraid to watch the outcome now?

As I sign the form to terminate my pregnancy, the doctor asks me for the third time, "You were willing to risk your health to keep this baby. What changed?" I press my hand to my belly. "A bottle of essential oil." Yesterday, the moment I open the car door, a sharp wave of rosemary hits me and sends my morning sickness spiraling. I reach for the window, but Adrian Lockwood grabs my hand. "Don't open it. Sloane loves this scent. She'll be upset if it fades." I freeze. "I'm pregnant. This isn't safe for the baby." He frowns, his voice full of impatience. "Stop being dramatic. You always use the baby as an excuse. It's just essential oil. What's it going to do?" Then he pulls the bottle from the glove compartment, places it right next to my air vent, and cranks the dial higher. "Just tough it out. We're almost home. Sloane can't fall asleep without it." The smell thickens until my eyes sting and my temples throb. I don't say another word. I quietly unbuckle my seatbelt and get out. Adrian never indulges my moods. He leans over, slams the passenger door shut, and drives off. I stare at the ultrasound, at the tiny shadow that already has a heartbeat, and close my eyes. If he doesn't care about me, I don't need him either.
