Chapter 21 I was at work the next day. When I got back to my apartment yesterday, I felt really tired and slept off immediately I stepped out of the shower and threw a big tee on. I ended up waking up earlier than usual by 4 AM and couldn't bring myself to sleep back so I just watched a N*****x show on my phone until it was time to start getting ready for the day. My mind was also occupied with thoughts of Dean and how his mood changed after his phone call with his girlfriend, Amber. He looked really downcast and upset.

AMIRA I woke up with a foggy mind. I couldn’t even say I woke up since I wasn’t able to sleep a wink last night. The entire night my head was filled with thoughts and worries of everything that transpire the day before. From my argument with Dad to Valeria’s threats and to Soren’s promise to make sure everything would go right in for us. I was plagued with doubt, worry and fear and I had no idea what I needed to do to get out of this dump I was in.

When your body knew the threat wasn’t immediate, but your mind hadn’t caught up. “I’m just trying to stay ahead of this,” I muttered. “I didn’t think it would spiral this fast.” Amaya pulled a second chair out and dropped into it, knees close to mine. Her voice was quieter this time. “What about me?” I blinked at her. “What?”

There is no second text. I put the phone down. I pick it up. I put it down. I go to bed at 1:00 a.m. I do not sleep. I lie in the dark and I think about a man in scrubs in a hospital in Los Angeles, and I think about a small gray dog in Silverlake, and I think about a kitchen floor, and I think about a hand across takeout containers, and I think about a man who said *I want people to know I am with you too,* and who has not texted me in thirteen hours. I sleep at 2:00 a.m.

For several seconds we simply stared at one another, neither willing to back down and yet my thoughts betrayed me. Despite everything happening, despite the fight, despite the dozens of enemies surrounding me, one irritating thought kept returning. I couldn't believe I was standing here threatening an entire army because of her. Couldn't believe I was risking all of this because of one stubborn woman who spent most of her time arguing with me. The realization was deeply annoying and I immediately pushed the thought away. I would think about it later. For now, none of that mattered. Amarok was standing directly in front of me and the aura rolling off him was growing heavier by the second.

Less cold. Almost… human. --- Ammie exhaled slowly. Then stood up. Stayed there for a few seconds longer. Before finally turning away. She shook her head slightly. “No… I’m overthinking.” But her heart didn’t agree. --- Then her phone rang. Blue. She answered quickly. “Girl! Are you ready?! The party is going to be crazy!”

Liya’s room was a mess as she tried desperately to arrange the clothes strewn across the place. Amani sat cross-legged on the bed, still in the clothes she wore earlier, looking like her brain was buffering. “I’m telling you,” she said slowly, “it happened too fast. One minute I’m doing normal work things. The next minute I’m standing in a glass office being… evaluated like a performance review with emotions.” Liya blinked. “Start from the beginning.” “I did,” Amani said. “That was the beginning.” Liya leaned forward. “No, no, no. There’s always a pre-beginning. Like… were you spiritually prepared for this?”
