Summer sighed tiredly. Her shoulders dropped, her lips pursed. "I'm not making excuses. What I said is true. Just try walking with your eyes closed and your hands tied. You'll definitely be slow. Let alone me!" The toddler pressed her chest with her tied hands. "I'm only four years old. I'm still small. My steps are also small. If you're tall, your legs are almost three times longer than mine. If you're short, maybe only twice as long. But no matter how short you are, your steps are definitely bigger. I have to take three steps to match one step of yours."

Just as he approached a room’s doorway, he heard Tina and Kara’s conversation drifting from inside the room. “Tonight’s bedtime story is called ‘Tadpoles Searching for Their Mommy.’ The warm spring is here… A bunch of little tadpoles want to look for their mommy… After overcoming all the obstacles, the little tadpoles finally found their froggy mommy. Together, they lived happily ever after…” Tina’s tone was gentle as she read the bedtime story out loud from the storybook to her daughter. Kara lay in her arms, her heavy eyelids already glued together. She struggled to say, “The little tadpoles are very pitiful… I won’t be separated from you, Mommy… Even if we do get separated, I’ll find you

The words flowed easily, but the story took me back to our happier times. “Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter…” As I read, I glanced over at James. He stirred slightly, and a small smile played on his lips. Sophie’s breathing deepened, a sign that she was sinking into a deeper sleep. The room felt warmer, filled with the memories of the past.

He crawled over without complaint and leaned heavily against me, resting his head on my thigh. His little hand clutched the edge of my shirt as he looked up at me with those familiar stormy gray eyes. “Tell me a story, Mama,” he whispered, voice already softening with tiredness. “A new one.” I stroked his hair, my heart swelling and breaking at the same time. “Okay, my brave boy. Once upon a time, there was a little explorer named Leo who discovered a magical garden hidden behind an old stone wall…” I told him the story slowly, describing glowing flowers that sang when touched, trees that grew candy fruits, and gentle butterflies that granted wishes.

she asks. Elizabeth takes a moment to gather her thoughts. "It's a difficult story to tell," she says. "But I want to be honest with you. So, here's what happened." She takes another deep breath, and begins to tell the story. It's a long and complicated tale, but she tells it with as much honesty and compassion as she can. As she speaks, Samantha listens intently, absorbing every word. When the story is over, they sit in silence for a moment, taking in everything they've just heard.

Sinjin couldn't remember the last time he'd had so much fun just goofing around. He and the boys had played games like chess, Monopoly, and Scrabble. When they grew tired of the games, they pleaded with him to tell them a story, so he fabricated one from his imagination. It had been so scary that they literally begged him to stop and cowered in fear under their blankets. Taking pity on them, he assured them they had nothing to worry about. While Troy stared at him skeptically, not believing him, Tristan simply grinned and called him an awesome storyteller.

he said softly. He sat on the edge of the bed, his voice low and steady as he began. The story wasn’t anything complicated. Just something simple. Something about a wolf who got lost and found his way back home. But the way he told it— The way the kids listened— It did something to the room. Something I wasn’t ready to name. By the time he finished, all three of them were asleep. Peacefully. Together. I stood there for a moment, watching them. Then turned.

And suddenly we’re being dragged toward the stairs like unwilling sacrifices. “Story time!” Nova declares in a sing-song voice, tugging me with shocking strength. “Two stories,” Nolan corrects, dead serious. “One because Grandma and Grandpa came, and another because they left.” That makes absolutely no sense but I’m not arguing with a five-year-old whose IQ is apparently higher than my own. “You can’t add stories because they left,” Nova argues. “Yes, I can.” “No, you can’t.” Nova snarls. An actual tiny snarl, before smoothing her hair and saying sweetly, “Fine. But what about adding one more because we were good the whole day?”
