This dream felt different, more real, yet something was amiss. Even in my most vivid dreams, Anton's smile hadn't been this radiant and innocent. It was an image that had long faded in my memories. "What's the date today?" I asked. Anton cocked his head. "Friday. Have you been studying so hard that you've lost track of time?" "No, I mean, what's the actual date?" I said. He chuckled, "March 25, 2011. You even reminded me this morning that tomorrow's your birthday. Don't tell me you've forgotten already?"

The fifth bond was nothing like the others. Veyra had expected it to be a surge of passion, a crackling storm like the others, like the ones with Kael, Zevi, Rune, and Lioren. She had imagined it would come like lightning—sudden and violent, an electric connection that would bind her to her fifth mate with the force of a storm. But this bond, the fifth, was different. It didn't arrive as a whisper. It didn't ease into her senses with the quiet, comforting pulse of connection.

"How old are they?" "Five." A muscle worked in his jaw. "We should go," I said. "Our driver's waiting." "Mara." "There's nothing to discuss, Luke. We're here on business. I didn't come looking for you." "But you're here. In Z City." "It's a large city. People live here. People visit. Standing in the same airport isn't a reunion." "Five years." When he swore he’d take care of me, that I’d never need to touch my dad’s money, it wasn’t love. He was just afraid I’d compete with Dawn. What a ridiculous five years it had been. Next year, I’d be thirty, and my entire twenties would end in lies and betrayal. I stood in front of the mirror and smiled faintly. A fine line had appeared at the corner of my eye. As I lifted my hand and touched my reflection, the line seemed to disappear for a moment.
