Leon raised an eyebrow, his grin growing wider. "I’ll accept that one too." But then, Aric’s next words made Leon pause. "Thank you… for being my salvation." Salvation. The word struck something deep within Leon, pulling him out of the lighthearted mood in an instant. His smile faltered ever so slightly, his brows drawing together as he studied Aric’s face.

"You murderer. Let me go." She began to struggle, her weak fists thumping against his back. Sloane did not flinch. He tightened his grip until her bones creaked. "Listen to me, Savior." His voice vibrated through her chest. "I do not know who you think you are. I do not care. Right now, you are a beacon for every Inquisitor in the Marches. If I put you down, they will get hold of you and do whatever they like to you." He paused. "Unfortunately, we are anchored together. If you die, I die too. So sit still and do not make this more difficult than it already is."

Alaya's POV I woke on the soft, mossy mound Henry left me on. The iron tang of blood still rested on my tongue. The horrors of the night came flooding back. The desperate pleas of women and children begging for their lives flooded my mind. It wasn't supposed to be like that. They were supposed to worship me for rescuing them from the moronic leadership of Ralph and his insipid son. The only ones supposed to die were Ralph and Casper and their soldiers.
