It was as if the darkness forbade the full moon to spread its light and to reveal that which was covered, even protected, by the darkness. Godric stood spellbound on the stage that led to his childhood fears. Another swallow. His throat felt dry, as if the liquid hadn't moisturized his throat in ages. Moments passed, then he was startled, dropped the candle, which rolled down the stairs and came to a stop behind the arch of the cellar entrance. The flame had gone out and only the glow of the moon seemed to give Godric a little light.

The screen blinked, and just like that, the first match hit the kindling. As she shut down the terminal, Lena leaned against the wall and stared at her own reflection in the dark glass of the data panel. Her eyes looked tired. Not righteous. Not triumphant. Just resigned because she hadn’t come here to destroy anyone. She’d come here to protect order, and whether they meant to or not, Calder, Ellan, and Rowan were a storm waiting to break. The Summit Council would take things from here. She had done her part.

Shutters rattled. Something loose on the roof clanged once then stopped. They ate little. Drank tea. Watched the fire. At nine seventeen the lights flickered. Not once. Repeatedly. Slow pulse. Like a heartbeat. They rose together. Checked the breaker box in the basement. Nothing tripped. They returned upstairs. The flickering stopped the moment they reached the living room. But the fire had burned lower than it should have. Embers only. They rebuilt it. Added logs. Flames caught.

It was close enough to disrupt the light. I watched, three feet away from the flashlight as it flickered once, twice, and then sputtered out. Darkness closed in on me, rushing in from every corner to swallow me whole. This darkness wasn't like the one I had felt when I watched my aunt fight for her life--but somewhere out there, I knew it was waiting for me. I scrambled to my feet, hearing the traitorous sound of my heart in my ears as I tried to calm myself down. I stumbled towards the flashlight, yanking it towards myself just in time to hear something scuffle across the earth.

Fluorescent lights above appeared to quiver, or not quiver, out of the need for a vision spinning on the tip of grasp—Lily's eyes darting too quickly as memories liked to creep into them and swallow her whole. "She no longer drops by—she stays here," she breathed. Dr. Anselm nodded, calm. "Are there flashbacks?" Lily exhaled. It was not a laugh, not quite. More the sound that had forgotten how to remember joy.

Here I was, nearing the end of my time in college, with no real certainty as to what the hell my next step was. I knew I wanted to get in government in some fashion, State Department, something like that. I knew it would happen or work out eventually, but right now I was feeling pretty low. And maybe that was the perfect time for a predator to seek me out. What if this guy was like Wyatt? I mean Haven said he was young and handsome, but everybody thought Wyatt was hot. I wouldn't even know it because we're going to be in the fucking dark. The idea of meeting a handsome stranger in the dark was kind of alluring to me I had to admit, but why not just ask me on a date?

Sure enough, it was gone. The image of him smiling at the clerk came to mind, along with the warm compliments about what a loving couple we were. That scene kept replaying in my head. I stood there in a daze, the bitterness in my chest slowly settling. I quietly told myself that maybe this was all just a one-sided crush on Serena's end. After dinner, Lucas suddenly set down his fork and said, "I have to work late tonight at the observatory. I need to observe a star that's quite rare."

Mustering up the courage I look back at the most beautiful face with the most captivating eyes but I can see the darkness hidden behind those eyes. Glancing at him with my tear-filled eyes, I see him staring back at me. "Seems like you are awake-" "Please! Let me go. Don't kill me. I am thankful to you for saving my life but please let me go. I will not tell anyone-" Before I could complete my sentence, that man pulls me off by grabbing my arm in a painful grip. I am looking at his dark eyes. He grabs my jaw with such a force that I think it will break anytime.

She seemed okay, her voice and mood did not seem like something was amiss. Stacie promised to wait right there for him. She kissed him good luck before he got carried away by the ophthalmologist. After the painful process, he'd fluttered his eyes open for the first time in ever. Arthur's first request was to see Stacie. But she was gone. Just like that, without any trace. Right there, Arthur plunged deeper into the sea of misery. Stacie left him, taking all the light with her. All that was left in him was darkness and loneliness.

I'm met with emptiness even though my eyes stray to the darkness in the corner of the room where the moonlight streaks fail to reach. I don't see him, however, something says he is in there, in the shadows watching me. I mean, that's the only time apex predators are out for the kill; in the dark. “Theodore!” I yell towards the door with a frantic voice. It's not helping matters that my ankle is cuffed against my wish. Oh, God! “Theodore isn't here to save you. You are with me now.” The voice is deeper, darker, promising dangers more than his words speak.
