It was close enough to disrupt the light.
I watched, three feet away from the flashlight as it flickered once, twice, and then sputtered out.
Darkness closed in on me, rushing in from every corner to swallow me whole. This darkness wasn't like the one I had felt when I watched my aunt fight for her life--but somewhere out there, I knew it was waiting for me.
I scrambled to my feet, hearing the traitorous sound of my heart in my ears as I tried to calm myself down. I stumbled towards the flashlight, yanking it towards myself just in time to hear something scuffle across the earth.
