Like he was escaping. "He's been so weird lately," Sophie said. "Working too hard, probably." Melissa gave me a look I couldn't quite read. Like she'd seen something. After dinner, everyone migrated to the living room for a movie. I sat through thirty minutes before claiming exhaustion. Sophie hugged me goodnight. "I'm so happy you're here. This is going to be the best Christmas."

Sparkle laughed at the logic. “Okay, you’re right. Still… Heard of DVDs? N*****x?” “You’re just going to keep talking, aren’t you? There’s no way escaping that? Like you going away?” “No such luck...” She settled into her chair as if getting comfy for a long visit. Kaleb shook his head and shifted his gaze back to the fire as if that little discouragement would send her on her way. “But back to movies,” Sparkle continued, leaning toward him over the arm of her chair. “This time of year, I like all the Christmas ones. The gushier the better.”

Where she gets her energy from I'll never know but I'm loving every moment of watching her. The next few hours consist of showers, matching Christmas pyjamas, takeout, sweets, popcorn and a movie called The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I'd never heard of it before but I loved every minute of it and so did Nina. "It's almost 9 pm and way past someone's bedtime." Nina gives me a pouty look before I've even finished talking but it's not going to wash with me. "Can I stay up a ikkle more momma, peas!" She holds her hands together like she's praying and while the scene she's putting on is adorable and has most likely already swayed Josh and Riley to agree, it's not worked on me.

By the time Yves Golding got home, it was already midnight. I was lying in bed, staring at a photo of him and Melissa Lane. His abs showed faintly beneath his red Santa suit as she leaned against them, eyes shyly closed. We wanted to have a Christmas together as a family. And then the surprise turned into a nightmare. The first thing my in-laws received after they went into the villa was not a hug. He clicked a few shots and frowned. "Hold your pose, guys." Peyton cleared her throat. "I think we're going for true giggles here. Perhaps we could get Mr. Gaines to sing karaoke at this year's Christmas party. A little rendition of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus?" Chuckles sounded behind Xavier, and he forced a grin as Mitchum fired off several clicks of the camera, moving slightly from side to side and crouching for a few. He rose. "I think we're good."

There would be plenty of times to talk after and during the movie. They chose a simple and light-hearted animation called “The uprising”. Steven who hadn't planned on enjoying the movie, found himself laughing at the absurdity of some scenes. At last, even Rick cracked a smile himself and seemed to relax. When the movie finished, Steven asked if he wanted to stay for another, and Rick lit up like Steven had offered him the world. Taking that as a yes, he paid for tickets for another light-hearted comedy, “Grandpa’s little warriors” which again made them laugh so hard that Rick appeared to have almost forgotten everything that had happened in the morning.

But since he had already completed this part of his plan, he was feeling quite happy and he was fine with that. "Well, I think we don't need to do any Christmas shopping yet. But I can ask if you can help us unpack and settle in tomorrow, right? So, I do the next best thing to be in the Christmas mood. I go to the bar and I pull out a bottle, dust clinging to the glass. I make popcorn, the buttery smell filling the kitchen. And when I curl back on the couch with both, I flick through the channels until I land on Home Alone. The one movie guaranteed to make me laugh when nothing else will. I pour myself a glass, clink it against the air, and whisper, “Merry Christmas to me.” The words barely leave my lips before a sound cuts through the room.
