He just made it happen. Max climbed onto one of the stools and began chattering about a dream he’d had involving robots, a talking tiger, and spaghetti. I smiled as I poured myself a mug of coffee, sinking into the corner seat by the window. My phone buzzed again from the counter. I didn’t have to check it. I knew the name. Dad – 24 missed calls. I hadn’t answered a single one. Not after that day. Max’s voice cut through my thoughts. “Mommy, want to watch that funny movie with the goats?”

When I sat down, I noticed that she had taken a tray for me with my favorite foods. "Thank you," I said with a smile. "This is why I know you missed me," she replied, amused, and then looked across the table to the soccer team. "I just don't understand how men can be so beautiful and handsome but be such first-rate fools." I discreetly looked to the front and noticed Max playing with a piece of cheese that he put on his forehead while the others were throwing things at them to bounce off the cheese. At the same time, he was making weird faces.

Charlie grinned and said, “Butt Trumpet?” Butt Trumpet was Max’s nickname back when they were in the orphanage. He used to be a chubby glutton who farted a lot, and more importantly, he farted wherever he went and whenever he felt like it. He would fart in classes, during game times, during meals, and when sleeping. At that time, everyone was troubled and in misery due to his farts, hence the nickname—Butt Trumpet.

Max sighed and coughed. "I think we need to go check out the church," I said. Max coughed again, sneezed. And shook her head no. "Uh-oh, now you're getting sick. You might have upset the spirits." She pretended to laugh, but not because I was being funny. Max told me multiple times that my sense of humor was stupid and dorky, even though she laughed at my jokes. Her current smile was a facade. She was battling a flood of emotions and needed to show me she was okay.
