Aurora’s POV The Ways of Deception. That was the name of the book lying open on my lap. The dim glow of the bedside lamp cast long shadows across my room and the words blurred into a meaningless haze. I sat propped against the headboard, my blonde hair loose and tangled and my silk nightgown clinging to my skin as the penthouse’s silence pressed against me. The book was supposed to distract me, but every sentence seemed to twist the knife deeper. Dammit, everything’s going wrong.

Forgiven. My ghost hovered in that ice-cold courtyard, nearly frozen through. On New Year's Eve, fireworks cracked and boomed outside, painting the night sky in bursts of blinding gold and various colors. From the manor windows, the display was spectacular. But inside, the holiday dinner was a tomb—silent and stagnant. Father sat at the head of the table. Before him were two place settings. One was for Matthew.

He smiled and turned on his heels, then disappeared into a stairwell before I could say anything in response. The book was titled Stories From The Other Side. I flipped it open to a random page. On Love and Monogamy, read a chapter heading at the top of the page. I laughed. That was definitely a subject I could use some help with. I got home late after a full day of lectures and sat down to eat in the dining room. I wasn’t expecting to see Nolan tonight, but he came striding in just a few minutes later and sat down beside me. A pair of servants hurried to fill wine and water glasses in front of him. He ignored them, gave me a sort of bedraggled smile and asked, “How was your day?” His voice

When they ran towards the window to see what was going on, they met pitch darkness, which could obscure anyone's vision, even from seeing their own toes. "What do you think that was, Miss Milburn?" Patrilia asked, looking around him. "I don't know. It may be wild animals. Don't forget, we are not staying in some fucktown or rural house. "We are spending another night in this goddamn mountain, full of trees, wild animals, and beasts." She chuckled, going to her own room.

Kyle opened it quickly and swirled inside. Aidan was sat at his desk. He swiveled in his chair and gasped when he saw Kyle standing there. “Can I help you?” he said, adjusting his glasses. Kyle pulled up a spare chair and sat himself down, his face uncomfortably close to Aidan’s. “As a matter of fact, you can,” he said. He smirked as Aidan leaned back, trying to get some space between them. It was then that Kyle noticed the book that lay open on Aidan’s desk. He hadn’t been able to read all that well in his human days, but he could still recognize the word vampire.

Caleb flew over the Manhattan night sky, Sera trailing behind him, and as he dove lower, flying over the Bronx, he could see, with his vampire vision, the details of what was happening on the streets below. It was mayhem. Humans were fighting humans, stores were being looted, cars were piled up in the streets. It looked as if a war had broken out.
