The baby’s first wail ripped through the night like light breaking through a storm. The antlered shadow faltered, its power flickering. Kael tore free of its grip and howled, the sound joined by every wolf in the Hollow. Their chorus rose like thunder. The moon split the mist, blinding silver burning the shadows away. The creature shrieked once more, then dissolved into the earth, leaving only silence and smoke in its wake.
