Their eyes glowed with that unnatural, ancient light, and every one of them was fixed on her.
Aiden moved closer, shielding her instinctively. But Evelynn couldn’t look away from the tallest of the creatures. His body seemed more stable than the others, his form holding longer in one shape. When he spoke, his voice was low, guttural, scraping along her skin like iron dragged across stone.
“The fire lives,” he rasped. “At last.”
Evelynn’s pulse hammered in her throat. She forced her voice not to shake. “What do you want from me?”
