It lunged toward her. “Emily!” I shouted. But she didn’t move. She raised her hand slightly. And the ground answered. A wall of stone shot up between her and the shadow. The shadow slammed into it. And for the first time— It reacted violently. The air around it twisted. The darkness flickered. Like it was unstable. Emily pushed forward. The stone wall cracked— Then surged outward. The shadow broke apart. Not gone. But scattered. Like smoke caught in a strong wind. The pieces pulled back toward the crack in the ground.

he growled. “Oh, I’m helping,” Ember sing-songed, clearly delighted. I buried my face in my hands. “I hate all of you.” No you don’t, Liora whispered slyly. You want them. You want everything. And soon, you won’t be able to resist. Later, after Ember went to stay at Liam’s and the Shadow Fangs finally left, it was quieter. Just me, Zander, and Rowan. I curled up on the couch under a blanket, still wearing Zander’s shirt, my body aching in ways that felt almost good now.

Kade hissed. “My focus is on my mate!” I met his glare, seeing the fire burning in his eyes. “Did either of you hear what I was even saying?” Kade sounded annoyed, but I didn’t care. Listening to him yammer on was not part of my agreement with his Queen, and while he spoke, I let my eyes wander over Ember, ensuring she was unharmed. “I used shadow magic. Got it. It probably won’t ever happen again.” Ember said, sounding defeated.

My heartbeat begins to quicken and before I can stop it I’m eight years old again. One thing that I have always found very weird is that when I have these flashback, I don’t feel the pain that I must have endured. I have these little clips in time but not the memory of the pain. Instead, I feel the emotions that I felt the terror and sorrow that I was in. I felt happy at first. It was a boring day at home. I was playing in my room shaving the hair off of my barbies and designing new outfits for them out of some of my old clothes. I had always been an odd duck and never much of a girl. I liked playing in the mud and playing sports. One this particular day I was still in my pajamas because nob

“One who has not yet risen. When they do, the world will tilt. And only the gatekeeper can choose which shadow survives.” My skin prickled. Something shifted inside me. A cold blooming beneath my ribs, wrapping around my flame like an answering twin. I gasped, clutching my chest. Orion was instantly at my side, eyes sharp with alarm. “Ember—?” “Shadow,” I whispered. “It’s waking up inside me.” The flames that once answered me alone danced now with shadowed tendrils, smoke and fire twining like fate. Lazriel turned to me slowly. “You are both.”

Only shadows, thick and oppressive. Then the shadows shifted. Ember watched, paralysed by the scene unfolding before her. Isla’s eyes widened in alarm as she realised she was being followed—watched, hunted. The air shimmered with a heat that felt wrong, a bitterness that clawed at the edges of Ember’s consciousness. It was hungry, feral. A figure stepped forward from the shadows—towering and cloaked in swirling smoke, his features obscured by darkness. Ember’s heart raced as she felt the presence; the aura of the rival clan’s alpha was unmistakable.

I've been working on a book called "Love Amongst the Shadows" it's in the same universe as these stories and eventually those characters will meet with these. Melody stands at the top of the stairs and looks down at her children and the two dogs in the amber light, and then she closes the door carefully, the way you close a door to a room where someone you love is sleeping. Upstairs the shop is all shadow and salt-smell. Outside, the wind has a voice now. Not a howl—too early for that—but a presence, a register, the bottom note of something that will get louder. The boards over the windows make it dim as dusk in here, though the sky has only just gone to amber.

The magical artifact glowed brightly, lending the imperial forces renewed vigor as they charged towards the remaining outlaws. Suddenly, there was a loud piercing screech and a large shadow fell on the outlaws as an enormous creature blocked the sun.
