There was an old man, wearing some old rags for clothes, sitting at the booth right next to ours, holding a cup of coffee I guess, with his face down, staring at it. When did he get there? During the boat ride, Adrian had started to shake. It freaked out the goons. Storm had convinced them to give Adrian a hit of the milkweed to calm him down.

“Is it done?” Enzo nodded. “Yes.” A small, years-long vicious bloom of satisfaction rose in Paulo’s chest. He tightened his grip on the cane until his knuckles cracked. “Adrian?” “Behind bars. I watched them take him myself.” Good. “Bail?” Paulo pressed. Enzo hesitated. Just a fraction too long. “Denied,” he said carefully. “As expected.” “I knew it would hold.” He barked out a low, rasping laugh, “My son always did mistake arrogance for invincibility.”

Luna Claudia nodded in response and she shook her head, snapping herself out of whatever she was thinking. “You are right about that one,” Luna Claudia said, and Mario wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her to his chest. He looked at Ezra who was standing on the windowsill from the outside, staring out at the people. It was a habit that he often had, a trick that he taught me whenever he wanted to run was to jump out of these heights, and though I knew that I might never be as good as he was, I knew that he was impressed by how fast I learned. The way she held her shoulders. The way she paused before stepping down a slope. The way she looked back once over her shoulder before continuing. Boone watched her through the open space. “She’s not moving well,” he said quietly. “She’s pregnant,” Adrian answered. “Yes.” There was no emotion in Boone’s tone, but there was calculation. He shifted slightly to get a clearer angle.

Carlos grunted in response as he crouched down, picked up the box with ease—as if the bartender did not weigh a thing—and walked out of the room. Penelope watched him go out with a complicated expression. She had never expected Adrian to be so brutal. Torture wasn't too far from her expectations, but the method he had used... Especially since the bartender didn't have any useful information. She knew Adrian would not have gone this far for information, knowing fully well that the bartender knew nothing. She concluded that the bartender must have gotten on his nerves. But the bartender was almost half dead; did he have to go that far?
