I opened the cover and felt my breath hitch in my throat as I saw the pages filled with amateur but deeply soulful drawings of me. He had captured me sleeping on the terrace and laughing at the stubborn goat and even the way I looked when I was frustrated with a particularly difficult shade of blue. There was a drawing of me looking out at the sea with my hand on my stomach that felt so intimate it made my eyes sting with a sudden rush of emotion. "I wanted to try and see the world the way you do and I realized that the only thing worth capturing was the way you look when you finally feel safe," he admitted.

Nodding my head, I replied, “Yes, I understand that you would want to keep your secret hideouts away from me. I would not want to reveal my territory and its secret passages to a stranger either.” Garcia gave a small smile and opened the large paper roll and laid it out on the table. What caught my attention immediately was that it was hand drawn. It wasn’t the printed version that I had in my office or any other alphas that I had met. "What does your new friend look like, Heidi?" Heidi proudly lifted her drawing. It was a crude, childish sketch of a very tall figure standing between two giant green trees. The figure was colored completely in dark gray and black crayons, but the most unsettling part was the face. Heidi had used a bright yellow crayon to draw two massive, perfectly round circles for the eyes.

All they did in my class was practice adding and subtracting. Mom got a funny look on her face when I told her that I like to draw during math. While the other kids werre counting on their fingers I would pretend to be working in my workbook. Truthfully, I was sketching. I had some cool drawings in that workbook, hidden way in the back. I like to draw weather events, uncontrolled power unleashed on unsuspecting souls. I liked hurricanes and tornadoes the best. I loved the power a storm generated. The inevitable destruction it would cause was fun to try to put on paper. Sometimes I would see a storm raging in my mind and I could barely draw fast enough to get all the details on the page

Remembering shouldn't be hard but expressing it will be. I think about the various things I have seen in my lifespan. Blood, bullets, pills, dead bodies. I could go on. Most of them aren't really suitable for this environment and explaining it will be impossible. What can I use? There's really nothing I can use that isn't somehow related to my past. Looking over at what Abe's doing, I see that he's drawing I think a scene of trees. Abe draws with these really thin and long lines, which makes his sketch look a lot like an animal's pelt. But I think that's what it is. And there's an outline of mountains in the background. Is that...Lonewood?

Just unmarked leather and the weight of secrets waiting to be discovered. I opened it carefully, mindful of pages that looked fragile enough to crumble at a touch. The first page made me gasp aloud. Ink drawings filled the yellowed paper—not the crude sketches of an amateur, but artwork of remarkable skill and disturbing beauty. A wolf, massive and powerful, its eyes rendered in such detail I could swear they were watching me from the page. And beside it, a woman in flowing robes, her hand extended toward the beast as if in offering or benediction.

Fluffy eagerly walked toward the walls, gesturing for Adrian to join him. After ensuring they were safe, Adrian approached. "Hmm, let’s see what they depict..." He scrutinized everything. He observed that the drawings on the wall were both complex and simple. The complexity stemmed from the multitude of lines intricately drawn in the murals, giving it an intricate appearance.

He rushes in and stops at the edge of Adrian’s bed. Adrian’s eyes widen in surprise. “Hey, champ.” Liam pulls out a folded paper from his bag. “I made you a drawing.” Adrian tries to sit up straighter. “Let’s see.” Liam hands it over carefully. It’s a crayon sketch of the three of us—me, Liam, and Adrian—holding hands under a bright yellow sun. There’s even a dog beside us, though we don’t have one. Adrian stares at it, clearly touched. “This is amazing.”

There, hidden behind a curtain of weeping carbon-fiber vines, was a small, dilapidated shack. "What is this?" I asked. "The only place the grid can't see," Xander said. He pulled back the vines, and I saw a wall covered in jagged, hand-drawn charcoal sketches. I gasped. The sketches weren't of buildings or machines. They were of us. There was a drawing of a man and a woman standing in a mountain of gold; a drawing of a girl with a wooden ring; a drawing of a man with orange eyes holding a woman in the rain.

As he's nearing it, he quickly looks at me before turning back to the window, and I lie on my belly, wrapping both of my arms around his neck, knowing he's about to jump, and close my eyes, scared. I feel a sinking sensation in my stomach as he leaps through the window, and it deepens as he goes down. I opened my eyes when he landed on his feet and sat up, now holding onto a thick strand of his fur as he began to run with me through the woods. The rhythm of his body below me grows powerful, and my hips move faster, forward and backward, becoming one with his movement. I felt the cool wind on my face, blowing through my hair, and the scent of trees.
