Brandon’s frosty stare silenced him instantly. “We greet Your Imperial Majesty,” Brandon said smoothly, performing a precise bow that Albert reluctantly mirrored. Alaric, clearly annoyed by the intrusion, spoke curtly. “Arise.” The two straightened. Albert’s grin widened into a gap-toothed beam. “Looks like you had quite the party here, Lykos,” Albert said, using Alaric’s old nickname. “You vanished again without even a ‘hello’ to yours truly. Sourpuss here was about to order a Pan-Galactic Deployment. You’d think he’d stop worrying by now.”

“I just can’t… I can’t move. I think I’m stuck. I need to get up but I can’t get up. I’m stuck!” Alaric frowned, leaning closer to me. “What do you mean you can’t move? Are you in pain?” “Does it look like I’m joking? I’m not in pain I just can’t move. I think something is wrong.” Without saying a word, Alaric reached into his pocket for his phone and dialed a number on his phone. “This is Alaric,” he said in a clipped voice. “I need you to get here immediately.” Then he hung up and said, “They are coming.”

I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. “Alaric?” Alexander’s voice was filled with surprise, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of the man who had just entered. “Alaric as in Alaric Reventhorn?” Astrid’s eyes widened, her voice tinged with disbelief. “Yeah, the one and only,” I replied, a small smile playing on my lips despite the judgmental looks from the others. “Lilac, are you sure he’s the right choice?” Madeline asked, her tone cautious.

I wonder how many of them remember what laughter sounds like. Inside, heat slams into me. Pine smoke, polish, too much perfume. It would appear that wealth has a smell. Sweet and rotten at the same time. Alaric waits at the far end of the hall, seated on a dais pretending not to be a throne. He’s younger than I expected, or maybe just well-preserved by vanity. Hair silver-streaked, eyes like frozen smoke. He smiles as we approach, and every instinct in me wants to bare my teeth. I bow instead.

I expected him to beg. Instead, Alaric did something that made the hair on my arms stand up. He laughed. It wasn't a nervous laugh. It was a deep, genuine sound of triumph. He leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms, looking at me with a pitying, dark amusement that chilled me to the bone. "You really are a masterpiece, I'll give you that," Alaric said, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm. "The accent, the walk, the way you’ve managed to turn my own children into your little spies... It's world-class. Truly."

"My name is Alaric." He said and I smiled. "Pleasure to meet you, Alaric." I said and finished up feeding him the food. I was actually taking a big risk by keeping Alaric in the shack. If my parents or worse, other people of the town found out that I was keeping a man that wasn't my husband or bethroted, they would rule me a prostitute and finally get what they wanted.

Alaric rolled his shoulders back and threw his head side to side, cracking it. Alaric threw the door open with a bang. He was playing the part he had been born into. His body language shifted into the arrogant know-it-all I heard speaking to Kroll. I leaned on Pru. I tried my best to mimic her, from toes connecting with the aged hardwood floors to the drop of her head. Head down, slow movements, and eyes on the floor. Alaric led the way down an old decaying hallway. Pru and I walked a few steps behind him. The faint smell of mildew tickled at my nostrils, causing me to scrunch up my nose. With each step, my body seemed to get a little bit more control.
