Alaric giggled as I tickled his side. He was such a happy baby. He hardly ever cried and always had a smile on his face. Eleanor was very excited to see him each day and I was starting to think she liked him more than I did. After going through the side list of names in the book Hermes brought over, I settled on Alaric. It meant powerful. And it perfectly suited him, somehow, I believed he would become an image of his name. Eleanor liked the name too. She liked everything that had to do with Alaric. It was my first time hearing Alaric use a swear word and for my sake no less. It comforted me in a way that it shouldn’t have. Before I could say anything in response to what he’d said, someone called his name from across the room. He nodded once, eyes still on me before stepping away to speak with them and a couple of minutes after he left, I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.

"Don't be afraid, Your Highness. Prince Alaric is here!" Alaric, dressed in his wedding suit, frowned as he stepped into the inner courtyard. After looking around, his shocked gaze landed on me. "Why is it so lively here among the ladies? What happened here?"

” he screamed, eyes bulging as he gagged on the taste. “Whose name?” I pressed. “I’ve heard them mention it a—” “Just say the fucking name!” Alaric groaned from behind me . “Nadira… Nadira Vargan,” he gasped, trembling. I froze, every nerve on fire. Nadira… Lucien’s mother?

But I have learned a few words for this handsome man,” Alaric said, reaching up and trailing his fingers along Adrian's face at the words “handsome man.” Nikolai made a retching sound, and then yelped when his Dad smacked his back. He spun around and threw his hands up in defense when Charlie raised his hand again.

He smiled at me, his voice deep and dominant, “You must be Princess Elora, the new intake.” “Y-Yes,” I nodded like a woodpecker. “Yes, sir.” He held up his smile, “Oh, please. The name's Alaric Greyhound.”

The last time she saw Alaric was at her wedding. That day, the free-spirited man had called her during her wedding banquet, standing amidst the crowd. His voice had been teasing, laced with the unmistakable slur of alcohol. "Hey, listen to me—don't marry him. Look at me. If you agree, I'll stop the wedding right now." At that time, Alaric still wasn't that fluent in Farshyan. Having grown up overseas, his accent gave him a polished, foreign charm. His classmates used to joke that it made him seem like a gentleman from abroad.

Alaric growled, his voice low, “That’s enough.” I didn’t move, “Then tell me I’m wrong.”
