“I am guessing that you haven’t been successful scrying for Jessica?” “I’m going to upset some people by doing this,” Alice said grudgingly. “But you had better come in.” She opened the door fully and they stepped into the shadows of the shop, through a jungle of potted plants. Alice closed the door behind Talen and then edged around them, before leading the way between the display tables in the shop to a rear door. “You must be quiet,” Alice told them sternly. “As little mice,” Aislen promised and then looked at Talen with a slight smirk. “Or a little mouse and a lion.”

“You’re still his mate. That makes you Luna, wolf or not.” Her confidence in that statement didn’t quite reach me. I tried to change the subject to one that wasn’t about me. “What was she like? His first mate?” Alice’s hands fidgeted with the hem of her apron. “She was really kind. Beautiful too. We had to take down her pictures and cover up the sculptures but I could show you one sometime if you like.” She offered generously and I shook my head, knowing I wasn’t quite ready to see my predecessor yet.

Somewhere a Sultan would have lived. “Mr Wells seems to have a fascination with wolves, it seems,” Alisa commented, admiring the taste. “Oh yes, ma’am. You would wonder if he was a werewolf in secret.” The woman joked. “Even our logo has a wolf in it.” Alisa laughed, her chest loosening up. She was so thankful for that joke. “He is waiting for you on the second floor, ma’am.” “Oh.” Alisa moaned. Her heart started thumping again.

A wave of apprehension washed over Alicia. "What are you doing, Lilith?" Alicia asked, trying to conceal her unease. Lilith quickly hid the envy in her eyes and fixed her expression, pretending nothing was amiss. "Just checking out your work. You're pretty fast with your designs. Are you still using the old-fashioned pencil and paper method? Is your computer broken?" Lilith mocked with a smirk. "No, my computer isn't broken. But I believe that paper and pencil are the perfect tools to showcase my ideal design," Alicia replied as she walked towards her desk.

Alice I walk over to the flip chart and pick up a red marker. There aren't a lot of colors to work with: green, blue, red, and black, but I think I can create something that will grab Nathan's attention. While music blasts, my hands work their magic. A smile is stretched across my lips, and I pick up my red plastic cup to drink while creating my hilarious art on this paper. I'm drawing a portrait of Nathan, but I'm being bold. This is Picasso's style I'm using for inspiration.

And beyond it, just visible through the trees, a flicker of movement — a human silhouette stepping away from the altar, glowing mark on her palm. “Ava,” Silas breathed. The silver wolf barked once more and bounded toward the clearing. Silas broke into a run.

(Alicia) I step forward, and I can feel every gaze locked onto me, a collective breath held in anticipation. I carefully unbutton the jacket that matches my blue gown and take it off to show my bare shoulders and arms, revealing the intricate, blue-lined mark that stretches from my neck, across my shoulder, and down my upper arm: a beautiful blend of swirling Elven patterns that somehow form the shape of a howling wolf against a full moon. It glows under the moonlight, symbolizing a bridge between two worlds.

The two women gasped when they saw what Alfred had created. “The theme is the world in a hole,” Alfred said shyly as the girls took in his work. The trees had holes in them, some of them shallow and some of them deep. And inside the holes were all sorts of little scenes: a flower garden, a family of squirrels, exotic plants, even entire landscapes. It was as though they were viewing a little tiny world within each hole. It was whimsical and wonderful, and the women took their time looking into each little hole. “Oh, look at this one,” Olivia cooed. “It’s an ant parade. How sweet!”

Silhouette Two I had never left my hometown. I had never had any reason to; after all there was everything I would ever need in it. A college, where I had gotten my degree, and a family business I had hoped to take control of one day. But things changed. And I didn’t know whether that change was going to become for the worst or for the better.
