Ann sat quietly at the wooden table in the small country home, staring down at the old flip phone in her hand. Her fingers traced the edges of the device as the weight of the conversation she had just had with Evelyn lingered heavily in her mind. The night was silent, save for the occasional crackling of the fire burning in the hearth beside her. It was a comforting sound, but tonight, nothing could ease the turmoil that had settled deep in her chest.

Thunder pounds in the sky, and the loud reverberation shakes me to my senses. Pushing myself off him, I side-eye him, wiping my hands on my shorts. He looks away first, pulling himself up out of the mud. I head to my side of the truck and climb in. That was close, way too close. Seconds later he slips in behind the wheel. The radio plays Jake Owen's latest hit "Alone With You."

"You really don't ask for your clothes back, do you?" "Not when they look better on someone else." Heat rose to my cheeks. As I changed, Drake politely stepped onto the balcony, giving me privacy. When I was done, he returned carrying two mugs. "Tea?" I accepted one gratefully. For several minutes, we sat on the edge of the bed without speaking. The quiet was interrupted by the vibration of Drake's phone. He glanced at the screen. His relaxed expression disappeared instantly. "What is it?" I asked. "It's one of my security guys."
