I freshened up, looked at myself in the mirror, flushed cheeks, wild hair, a smile I barely recognised and then made my way back, ready to return to the fun.
But when I stepped out onto the floor, everything had shifted. Alan was sitting at our booth. Alone. No drink in hand. No smile. Just watching the floor, his jaw was tense.
I looked around... no Dana, no David. The music was still going, people were still dancing, but our little bubble of fun had popped.
I started walking toward him, already asking, “Where’s Dana?” even before I reached the table.
He looked up at me, and something in his expression changed.
