I know I fought for this position with Shirley, but I had to be honest that I wasn’t really sure what a Luna did. Leo smiled as if he expected that question. “The Luna has all the same power as their Alpha male. That’s why it’s important for Lunas and Alphas to mark one another. Once Alpha Elliot marks you officially, you’ll share his powers and be able to command other wolves of your pack.”

My thoughts pour unfiltered from my mouth. Silence settles between us. "So?" I ask. "What is a Luna?" Ulric leans against the desk, folding his arms. "A Luna is not just a wife. She is the female Alpha. My equal in rank, even if our roles differ. She stabilizes the pack emotionally. She strengthens the bond between members. A good Luna can hold a pack together during war." I blink. "So not just breeding stock?" His eyes darken slightly. "No. Never just that."

Unlike Perseus and Achilles, my function is to protect my Luna from her own companions if necessary. This function did not arise by chance. For a long time, Alphas imprisoned their Lunas so that they would not be "tainted" with inappropriate thoughts. At least, that's what they said. Despite the balance, a Luna is as strong as an Alpha, but an Alpha is never alone, and therefore the Luna has always been at a disadvantage. To help the Lunas, the position of Luna's Gamma was created, so that she would always have a faithful protector, beyond the bond of her companion. The Alpha of the pack cannot command the Luna's Gamma, and his command is not as strong as the Luna's.

“She’s not just somebody standing beside the Alpha looking pretty while the pack bows to her.” I snorted softly despite myself. “Good. Because I think I’d fail that job immediately.” A tiny breath of amusement escaped him before he turned serious again. “A Luna balances the Alpha.” That sentence caught my attention. “What does that mean?” “It means when the Alpha loses control, the Luna becomes his anchor. She stabilizes the pack emotionally. She protects the weaker wolves. She carries authority second only to the Alpha himself.” I stared at him carefully. “So… basically everybody hates me because they think I can’t do any of that.”
