Chapter One Faelen’s POV I woke up feeling a knot of anxiety in my stomach. Today was the day, the day I would be sent on my mission by Alpha Zodd. It was a rite of passage for every omega in the Belladonna Pack, and I had waited for this moment for three long years. Since my parents had passed away, both in an accident, Alpha Zodd had taken me in, but only as a ward. My omega status meant I lived apart from the Alpha’s estate where only members of the pack with higher status lived. I was made to live with servants and low ranking wolves.

I asked, heart hammering. “You need to see this,” she gasped, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the ridge. From there, I could see the entire pack gathered, faces drawn tight with tension. Kael stood at the center, rigid as a stone, muscles coiled like a spring ready to snap. Across the clearing, a large shape emerged—another Alpha, tall, broad, commanding. His gaze swept over our pack with a challenge that froze the blood in my veins. “They’re invoking the old ways,” the Omega whispered. “An Alpha’s Challenge… it’s been centuries.”

As he walked toward the darker path leading away from the field, his presence lingered, heavy and undeniable, long after he was gone. The bond pulsed again. Subtle. Persistent. The snarky smile never left his lips, but his amber eyes were suddenly hard, predatory. “Listen, little mouse,” he said, his voice dropping to a fierce snarl. “That particular piece of dirt is currently property of the Alpha.” He punctuated the word property with a slight, warning shake of her head. “The Alpha does not like his things damaged. If I catch any of you so much as looking at her with disrespect, Kael won’t skin you. I will. Now scatter.”
