All I knew was that there were more dead people as it came. I ducked under a lunging wolf and drove my elbow into its throat. When it staggered I shifted, claws sliding from my fingertips, and slashed across its chest. It went down and another filled the space like a tide. They were not stopping, and something told me that this was just the beginning of what this was going to be. “Alpha!” a warrior shouted, staggering toward me, blood streaking his shoulder. “They’ve broken the northern line! Also, every time I saw it, I imagined that Roberta and Vincenzo had made love on it, and that was disgusting. A black long-sleeved shirt underneath hugged his skin. Unlike the other black parts of the jacket, the top collar, the lapels, his cuffs, the buttons, and the center fronts of the coat were striking gold. His long black hair fell graciously on his shoulders. “Who’s that?” I asked pointing at a man that walked beside my father as he approached us. “Oh, that’s King Iyrick of Meldonis. This year’s ball will be hosted in his palace. I’m guessing he came to personally escort us to his kingdom.” Valerian answered, waving at the unfamiliar old man.
