It was only a brief moment, but I would recognize that tattoo anywhere. On the left peck of the man's chest, swirling ink formed a huge snowflake with a snarling wolf. I knew that picture. It was the sigil of house Caldore. I had seen it in books and read about it in stories. The older witches whispered it in the tales they told my village at night. Wolves with hearts as cold as ice and skin that snow melts upon. I was in Northwood, and what was worse was that I knew the man who was rummaging angrily through the books in his room. I should have realized it the moment I saw his glowing blue eyes.

I donated a dozen books from the Barlowe house—stories I wanted other young girls to find: Jane Eyre, Little Women, The Secret Life of Bees, Becoming, The House on Mango Street, and more. Books that had whispered to me when the world was too loud. Books that had taught me what a woman could be. Mrs. Bertram smiled as she scanned the titles. “This will change someone’s life,” she said. I nodded. “That’s the goal.” I stopped at the market afterward for fresh apples and ginger chews. A few people I knew offered kind smiles, congratulations, warm nods. The town had softened. The whispers had quieted. And even when they hadn’t… I no longer let them land.

The warm glow is enough for me, as my feet shuffle towards the books. All first collections. My fingers reach for their spines as I go from row to row, my eyes getting even wider as I move. Jane Austen’s first collection. To Kill a Mockingbird. Pride and Prejudice. Crime and Punishment. Ulysses. The Great Gatsby. These had to have cost a fortune. I reach the end of the top row and grab a book. Jane Eyre. A door cracks open in a corner, but it sounds so far away that I don’t move. Until a second later when I hear footsteps right behind me.

Another breath escapes me as I reach out and turn the shower off. Stepping out, I grab a towel and wrap it around myself before heading back to the bedroom. Nathaniel’s shirt lies on the chair. I grab it and pull it over my head. It's soft, faintly smelling of him, and it's adding to my annoyance. But I still want to wear it. Pathetic, isn't it? I shake my head, and I crawl into bed with one of my Kindles from the nightstand. Yes. I have one here, just so you know.

"What kind of novel? Any good?" "Just some romance Lillian sent me. Nothing special—just killing time." I fidgeted with the edge of the comforter, my tell when I'm lying.

Old. Well-loved. The spine was cracked from being read a hundred times.
