On nights like these, however, as the king’s knights trudged past them towards the library, just barely missing the pair, Elaine remembered very well what she was. Andrew pressed her close as they waited a moment against the cold rain rain-kissed cobblestone of a bakery’s outside wall. The mud soaked her boots, and she shivered in the cold. He was warm, however, and it helped fight through the chill, not that she would ever tell him that. Elaine’s heart was pounding loudly in her chest. As the road cleared, she felt Andrew tug at her hand this time, leading her back onto the road and towards the pale white towers of the academy.

Matthew saw Gabrielle on her phone smiling from the rearview mirror but could not tell what she was smiling about. Andrews upon receiving the text from Gabrielle, drove to the school and found a place to hide. Upon seeing Clara, Andrews entered the school compound and headed for the school's community library. "Hey, Clara, is that you?" Andrews called out from the entrance of the community Library acting surprised. Clara who was on her way out after finding out the person she came to look for was not around, turned to find out who it was that had called her and her gaze fell on Andrews. He did look different.

I reach them just as the words leave Andrew's mouth, causing me to look into the room they hadn't entered yet. Boy is Andrew right. There is no way on the Goddess's green earth that we'd make it through the tall filing cabinets, the shelves stacked with binders all filled to the brim with papers, Filofaxes piled high on one another, and random stacks lining every conceivable surface in this tiny space.

There are other ways to gain knowledge beyond the library. What other ways are there? I wondered, sipping from the coffee I’d made in the kitchen. Then suddenly, I heard a door creak open. Coffee in hand, I walked out of the kitchen to confirm whether I’d imagined it. I hadn’t. Andrew was outside his room, staring down at me from upstairs with a glass of alcohol in his hand. “Couldn’t sleep,” I explained, holding my coffee close to my chest with a thin smile. “Same,” he replied.

But I decide to wait for him in front of the room, sitting on the couch. Soon enough, someone knocks on the door. “It’s open.” Andrew walks in, his arms filled to the brim with paper bags of so much stuff. He takes all of them out hastily, as though to show them off to me. “I was late because I had to get these,” he explains defensively. “I even got a cake for her birthday. I got a dress here too, so she would stop reusing that pink one that she’s starting to outgrow. Where is she? Is she still asleep?”

The familiar streets of Auburn Hills blurred past him until he reached a community building on the outskirts. It wasn’t far from the main road, but it felt like it existed in a world of its own. Andrew made his way to the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. Stepping out onto the rooftop floor, the sound of water splashing reached his ears. In front of him, the pool stretched wide. Laughter and music filled the air as men and women, clad in swim trunks and bikinis, danced with each other.

She asked. “Where the hell did all the books go?” Beth asked, exasperated. “We had a library here once! Do you know why this generation is so dumb? Kindle! If you keep everything in a cloud and not real books, what the hell happens when the clouds blow away?” “The library was moved to the B block five years ago.” Andrea offered helpfully. “No one tells me anything!” “You were there, Beth. You supervised it." Andrea said, exasperated. "So what? You can tell me something once in a while. Of course, I was there, doesn't mean I remember everything about it.”

She adjusted her sleeves and tousled her long hair, casually saying, "I just saw Zoe, but now she's gone off somewhere. I'll go chat with her. You should go back and rest early." After Layla finished speaking, she twisted her waist and left. Andrew put out his cigarette, rubbed his sore brow with two fingers, and faintly smiled. We both walked out of the pack house and headed straight to Alpha’s library, which is a few miles away from the office. We got there about a minute later. Andrian opened the door, and we went in. We were welcomed by the thick air surrounding the library. The scent of old parchment lingered in our noses. We walked through the shelves holding dark leather-bound books that stood tall like ancient guards. Andrian let out an audible sigh. “Where do we begin?”

I carefully steered the conversation away from anything too personal and after a few more minutes of pleasantries, I took my place at the circulation desk, ready to start my day. I was halfway through reshelving a cart of returned fantasy novels when the glass doors of the library swung open, and Andrew walked in. My heart did a familiar lurch, a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. He scanned the room, his eyes finding mine across the rows of bookshelves. A subtle, almost imperceptible nod passed between us.
