I hear a gasp and look up to see Douglas’s dad staring at us dumbfounded, “you can hear the foetus?” Douglas nods enthusiastically, “yeah! He’s begging for bacon.” Everyone in the room- now filled with my mum, Mrs Knight-Gray, Douglas, his dad, Derrick's dad and Derrick start chuckling at the news. “Sounds like his daddy,” Derrick grins, “give in the damn bacon before he finds a way out to get it himself!” My tears halt and amazement fills its place, “our baby is talking to us? How? Through our minds?” “Exactly that,” Douglas grins, “it’s called mind-linking. We- as wolves, can talk through a form of telepathy. I guess this little guy has it down to a tee already.”

Gas barks. "Gas wants champagne," Alexander announces. "Gas doesn't want champagne," Ethan corrects. "Dogs can't have alcohol. It's toxic to them." "But she barked!" "She barks at lots of things. That doesn't mean she wants them." "Maybe she was saying congratulations." "Dogs don't say congratulations." "How do you know? Do you speak dog?" "No one speaks dog." "Gas does. She speaks dog to herself." Ethan opens his mouth. Closes it. "I can't argue with that."

I nodded. "I will explain the rules to you now and afterward you will have a chance to ask questions. However, after that, whenever you are Bella, you cannot speak. Dogs do not speak. They bark, they whimper, they growl, they even yelp sometimes. But they do not speak." He looked at me to ensure I was paying attention. Then he continued:

He can understand basic language well enough now.” Oisin explained. “Oh.” That meant that he had clearly understood anything I said around him. I quickly ran my memory back to see if I has said anything particularly bad. “So then if his soul is expanded then why can’t he talk?” I asked. Shouldn’t it go both ways? “Spirit not soul.” “Okay.” He hadn’t answered my question yet. Oisin sighed and replied. “He can’t talk because he’s a bear. Bears don’t talk.”

The gentle voice talked again, “I’m giving you my spirit animal to be your companion.” And she was too shocked to process that she could understand the axolotl when it said, “Hello!” “What the heck!” “You’re the only person who can understand me, princess.” The small voice of the axolotl said, and it smirked. “Oh, my goddess! I must be out my mind.” Malaika rubbed her eyes with her hand to ensure she was not hallucinating. Every shifter could not talk when they were in their animal form! The axolotl jumped to her shoulder that made her wince.

What shocked me more was that they could hear it. My mouth was moving, words spoken aloud. Wolves never spoke verbally, only through mindlink. And yet here I was, speaking. I nodded my head agreeing with him and entered the car. "What took you so long?" Kiaria asked. "It didn't look like you two were talking. You guys were just standing, looking around." I turned on the ignition of the car, backed out of the parking lot and drove into traffic. "To answer your question, Marcus and I were mind-linking. Wolves of the same pack can speak with each other through their minds because they are linked by one, the Alpha," I explained. "Kind of like telepathy?" Kiaria asked, surprised.

But he failed to hear the conversation going on around him for the last hour or more. “You’re talking about the bunnies, squirrels, and mice your sister spoke to?” Sapphire rolled her eyes at her mate and nodded. “Not all of us can speak to gods and goddesses, okay? You lucked out on that one.” She didn’t know how else to phrase it. But she tried to deliver the words more than a joke than a critique about who might have the more useful magical skills. Some might say speaking to animals would be the most useless skill. But they’d be wrong. As the blessed white wolf, and the one who could commune with the Moon Goddess, Sapphire could see here that her skill was useless.
