The kitchen shared a thin wall with the sitting room, and Elder Tomas, who was seventy-eight and had decided some decades ago that volume was a courtesy owed to the hard of hearing and everyone else equally, did not lower his voice for private conversations.
"Fine young man, that Shen," Elder Tomas was saying, with the satisfied tone of someone delivering a verdict they'd been considering for some time. "Good with Chen's boat, good with the children, respectful to the old women without being sycophantic about it. When are you giving them your blessing?"
A pause.
Father's response was quieter, but not quiet enough. "When I'm sure he won't break Avelin's heart."
I stood very still at the sink.
