Some lucky ones made it to work, like the clothing store manager just now. They had their own cars or rode electric bikes and got there safely, only to find the doors closed. People started gathering in small groups, confused, when someone covered in blood stumbled toward them. This was the early apocalypse. Everyone who saw this assumed it was just a fight or an accident.

The metal giant came to a halt with an ear-piercing creak, and from its window an avalanche of the driver's choice curses and the screams of passengers fell in an avalanche. They fell like dominoes, trying to grab onto each other in a panic.

Chapter 42 Raven’s POV The goddamn engine died with a pathetic cough somewhere north in the middle of nowhere, right as the first fat flakes of snow started whipping across the blacktop. The tour bus: our rolling black beast with its tinted windows and custom neon underglow, lurched once, twice, then rolled to a silent stop on the shoulder. The forsaken hazard lights blinked uselessly into the storm. No bars. No tow truck for at least twelve hours, the automated voice had said before the signal dropped completely.

I lifted my head to see what happened to Apocalypse. To my surprise was there a big hole in the ceiling and lots of debris and rubble mixed with wooden beams. I got up and walked over to what was over of the ceiling. I heard some groans coming from under the debris. Apocalypse was barely alive and stuck under big stone pieces and wooden beams. “You have to do better and more than this to stop me, you pathetic woman.” She coughed and spitted a clot of blood.

She murmured. Aaron had arranged the tour bus and driver. She had not even known such a service existed, but, as she stepped up into the bus, she could see it was popular – the carpet and upholstery showed a lot of wear and there was a faint smell to it, beneath the shampoo the company had used to clean the fabrics, that was reminiscent of a teenage boy’s bedroom – old gym socks, body odour, and cheap aftershave spray.

Angel gathered a handful of her friends into a hugging circle before taking her seat; Malcolm watched wide-eyed as the younger ones tumbled inside. Nathan performed a quick headcount. “Fifteen seats, fifteen passengers, perfect.” Mia swung onto the jump seat behind Jason, securing the door. Aurora gave one last reassuring hug to Angel, then sat beside Malcolm. Jason closed the door and eased the bus back onto the road. The tyres rolled past the bakery first. Through the window, the baker waved vigorously bread baskets stowed for delivery, flour dust still on his apron. The bus came to a smooth stop; Jason honked lightly.
