Ralin was pretty sure the bird was one of Lamashtu’s minions. He glanced out the window, seeking any sign that the creature was not alone. Seeing no other crows anywhere in sight, he looked back at the bird on his windowsill, wondering why it had come here. The crow stared back at Ralin, its black eyes seeming to bore into his skull. Ralin could almost feel the hatred emanating from the bird’s stare. He was not bothered—he matched the intensity of the bird’s gaze. Suddenly, the crow’s eyes lit up with a fiery red glow. Ralin was momentarily startled, but not really surprised. The deformed feet had already marked the bird as a servant of the demon.

His eyes are wide and he looks at a loss for words, like he can't believe what just happened. The crow caws again, and I spin around, waiting for another attack. Todd steps in front of me. The crow studies us with a black, beady eye. He hops to the edge of the table, opens his beak, and caws shrilly again. Todd lobs the book across the room. The book clips the crow, and it takes to the air, flying back into the bathroom and out an open window, disappearing into the night.

Kai counters. “Enough, Kai. We can worry about diaper duty when the time comes. Now, let's enjoy our breakfast, and then it’s time for me to take you to get your marking, Ever.” Dad shuts down Kai’s whine fest. How could I have forgotten the marking? I can’t wait to have my mark of the coven on my back like the rest of the official members. It’s a crow sitting on top of a skull with shadows swirling around it. It’s totally badass, and I’ve been dreaming about the Moment I get mine.

Miya said, and luna Nesta nodded. “In that case, all of us represent Arcanes. All of us pick up properties from people around us to form an identity of our own. If we see on a broad scale, none of us have a unique identity of our own, we borrow identities of others now and then and dispose of parts of those identities like the skin of a snake. Don’t we?” I said. Luna Nesta smiled, “you are absolutely right, Diana. Maybe Zephyr is indeed normal because Arcanes are normal too. They are the invasive species of the Gloom forests.”

“Don’t waste the arrows. You never got back the arrow you shot at the lake’s surface.” Cory counted the arrows left in the quiver: twenty-four arrows excluding the one made from Anestra’s quill. She could not fire that dark arrow until she was absolutely sure it would hit Anestra. The ash brown beast was acting strangely. It seemed to be struggling internally with something. “Something’s wrong with that one,” said Cory. “This one has a collar too,” said Hayden, his eyes alight with excitement. Without warning, Hayden rushed forwards. “No wait!” Squealed Cory.

At its center: a dais carved with twin wolves, one silver, one obsidian, facing each other with bared teeth and interlocked tails. Between them, something hovered — not quite a blade, not quite a staff. It shimmered with the same color as their bond: moonlight braided with storm. I stepped forward, breath shallow. “This was before the clans.” Aeryn didn’t move. “It was buried for a reason.” She turned to him. “And we were born and bonded for one.” They reached the dais together. The moment their fingers touched the artifact, the temple shook — not with collapse, but awakening. Runes lit along the walls. Stone wolves snarled into motion. And from the far shadows of the sanctum, a voice echo

Out of nowhere, a bone arrow sliced through the air and struck his chest with a sharp hiss. The arrow, upon contact with Jim's blood, glowed a sinister red. His face contorted in pain, and suddenly, his grip failed him as he plummeted from the sky. I dashed forward, my heart racing, and leaped to cover Jim with my body. The Haunts erupted into mocking laughter. "Jim, we've taken apart the bones of the mortal who wanted you dead and crafted them into these arrows. Take one more step and we'll pin you down in front of your own troops!"

cried Mars, in a voice that frightened everyone, as his black veins reappeared and his lenses became very dark.
