Another arrow, aimed not at Alexander but at me. He dove, catching it with his shoulder, the tip burying itself in his flesh. He went down on one knee, and I saw his face for the first time—pale, sweating, his jaw tight with pain.
"No," I breathed. "No, no, no—"
I ran to him. Ignored his shout of protest, ignored the arrows still flying, ignored everything except the man bleeding silver poison on the floor.
His thigh was a ruin, the arrow embedded deep, the flesh around it blackening. His shoulder was worse. The silver was spreading, I could see it crawling through his veins like liquid fire.
